Every university in Germany lets you repeat exams for example.
It is for people who cant study for 4 exams within 2 weeks, because they have children/have to work etc.

Fine let me rephrase it for your "repeat exams" intellectually impaired self.

What kind of third-rate university lets you repeat exams.

>>1617734
Then dont take 5 classes when you work full time and have 3 kids? This isnt rocket science.

In germany, well at least here in Hamburg you cant "take classes". If you are studying chemistry, you have to go to every lecture and pass on every exam.
Our schedule is full already without other classes.

I love europe. Why are we still fighting about pointless crap instead of working together like one big country?

I go to Oxford, and we don't get resits for finals.
Exams at the end of first year (do not count towards degree) are resit-able after summer and if you fail the resit you are out.

Finals however, if you fail a single paper you're fucked.

Yea, that is the same in Germany. I think he was talking about exams at the end of the year.

In countries that have less people than the US, it is not unusual to let people take repeats rather than making them abandon their knowledge. The US has so many people that it is competitive, however this isnt conducive to knowledge.

Wait let's clear some things up..

1) In US universities, are there examinations at the end of first year?
2) Do they count towards your degree?
3) What happens if you fail one such paper
4) What happens if you fail a finals paper? (one that DOES count towards your degree)

I'll answer those questions for my (UK) university

1) yes
2) no
3) you resit after summer. if you then fail you are kicked out.
4) you are kicked out

In the US, the standard is each course there is usually 2 exams (or papers), that go towards the grade of your class. If you fail the exam, and the rest of your scores are low (such as homework) you will more likely fail the class. And every class you take counts towards your degree. Like in most liberal arts colleges in the US if you dont pass your free electives you wont have enough total credits to get your degree. Class scores such as homework, tests, papers, and exams are usually weighted towards a final grade for the class.

Ah OK thanks. So it's just a different system, not a less forgiving system than Euro-unis as some posts ITT have alluded to.

>4 exams within 2 weeks

here if you have 4 exams in 3 consecutive days, you deal with it, but you can reschedule if you have them in 2 days.

lol some courses at my uni have 13 3-hour exams over 15 days

I had 4 in 4 days for 2nd year (weighted at 40% of my degree) and 5 in 6 days for 3rd year (60% of my degree)

Here in Spain, I just have 1 week during which I have to do all the exams of the semester, and 2 weeks for all the finals of the year.
