>backbone of fundamental research
Source? From what I can tell most of the good research breakthroughs are coming from private companies and turbo Newton shadow autists.

Sounds extremely American. The rest of the world doesn't have any of that.

It sounds Jewish, America is Jewish.

Also American Universities aren't combined with hedge Funds, they ARE hedge funds, that's their main business.

Also American Universities aren't backbone but backbreakers.
They are responsible for producing almost all the social, economic and political toxicity that has paralysed and basically killed at this point, a once great nation.
Everyone associated with these institutions deserves to get beheaded publically.

This is accurate for American schools.
It's also why American schools are so thoroughly fucked in the head.

What do you mean by this in simple terms? What is a university overtly doing that is like a hedge fund?

You should see how much Cambridge (UK) owns.
They get "donations" from their own spinoff companies tax free because theyre an educational institution.

Nah, not really. Also there's a difference between basic and applied research. The former is practically entirely in the domain of unis, and even for applied research the majority of it is still done by unis.

>turbo Newton shadow autists
Kek no. Unless you're talking about people like Perelman, but even he did a math phd.

Who exactly do you think is training all these people who do applied scientific breakthroughs in private companies anyways?

Nobel prizes are rarely awarded to people from the private sector, and even fewer go to non-affiliated individuals.
Likewise for the Fields Medal.
Note that OP talks about fundamental research, not engineering/implementation.
