Sup, this is the chosen thread for my base of operations on sci. Since I'll be here all night, I'll say right now you can ask me anything since I'm very creative. The aliens have been delivering me extremely important messages. Their last message was when they mentioned sci, I could tell, they were pretty sad about it. I'm not sure why and I'm here to research into this. Since I don't like seeing the aliens frown. I'll be posting here about aliens over the next 36 months since I don't have a job

Anyone remember Reaction Engines and Skylon?

A quick recap of the recent history--their native bongland and ESA basically ignored them or gave them pennies at best, but in 2017 DARPA started throwing dosh at them and arranged testing of their revolutionary engine precooler in the US in 2018. Also during 2018 in the US, an unremarkable startup Hermeus popped up, promising hypersonic flight like so many aero/spaceflight startups that never go anywhere.
Fast forward to present day and Hermeus has somehow solved the same precooler problem for their hypersonic engines, seemingly without the necessary R&D investment. US really knows how to grab promising tech and has the enterpreneurship possibilities to exploit that.
I thought you might find this interesting.

I don't think the Hermeus precooler is on the same level as RELs one. They are just talking about a combined turbojet/ram jet, which people have tried to do before. They don't seem to be talking about launch at all. They have very little detail on their website, it's mostly filled with buzzwords for investment and unnecessary pictures of their diverse staff.
It's also a bit moronic as they talk about building a new SR-71, which never happened before because spy satellites. But now LM is developing the SR-72, without their precooler.

The operating envelope and temperatures are basically the same. Nobody but REL and Hermeus have done this.
Yet Hermeus hasn't had world-class thermal engineers on their payroll, barely even any average ones. Lots of open positions though, even to date!

Hermeus is just not going for the airbreathing rocket engine SSTO meme but the infinitely more marketable high speed pax flight (which REL also pivoted towards when funding wasn't happening), and also defense applications--basically going for a modern XB-70 inspired waverider rather than SR-71.

The term "innovative" is meaningless buzzword. If something is innovative, there is innovation involved. Innovation necessarily means its being put out on the market. If its not on the market, then its just a dumb lab project. There are millions of lab projects. Lab projects are just 1 step away from arxiv/patent respository library where 99% of the stuff never gets created. And for labs, 99% dont make it to reality.

Innovative is only when there's an actual innovation happening. And the term "innovation" means making it real, in hardware.

Owari da.

>Astra founders warn of "imminent bankruptcy." The founders of satellite propulsion and launch vehicle company Astra have sharply cut their offer to take the company private, warning of “imminent bankruptcy” if the company doesn’t accept their new proposal, Space News reports. In a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Tuesday, Astra released a letter sent three days earlier to a special committee of the company’s board of directors from Chris Kemp and Adam London, the chief executive and chief technology officer, slashing by two-thirds their offer to buy outstanding shares of the publicly traded company.

>Pray I don't alter it further ... In November, Kemp and London proposed to buy Astra shares at $1.50, approximately double their price at the time they announced the deal. In the new proposal, they are offering only $0.50 per share. Kemp and London cited several reasons for cutting the share price. They included continued cash burn by the company since they tendered the original offer and higher “non-operating expenses” as the company used multiple third-party advisers to assess options. Under the revised proposal, Kemp and London said they anticipated raising $45 million overall to take Astra private, of which $7.7 million would go to shareholders. (submitted by Ken the Bin)

>The need for IVA suits is the biggest problem
Also people change weight and therefore shape. I guess if you design them well with advanced materials you might be able to adjust them a bit and get some leeway but they're not going to be cheap. And then there's children - they'll grow out of the suit very quickly. Easier to have a lower age limit but you've then shrunk your market.

SLS isn't really the biggest problem. It's a budgetary disgrace, but most of that is money that's years past spent by now.

The real problem is SLS Block 2. We're spending (at least) $1.5 billion on ML-2 just to get it to the pad and (at least) $3 billion on the Exploration Upper Stage, all so we can have a version of SLS that can comanifest two modules for Gateway. ABL originally wanted to fly out of Vandenberg but moved operations to Kodiak since it was easier. Also, in Markusic's Estronaut interview, he prided himself in having a rocket qualified to fly out of Vandy (before its first launch IIRC) and implied that Kodiak was for unreliable rockets. >“Right now, we have a schedule that closes for a launch by the end of the year,” Peter Beck, chief executive of Rocket Lab, said of Neutron. “But, we’ve got a lot of testing to get through.”
>One reason the company is pushing to get Neutron launched before the end of the year is to ensure that it can be eligible for the first Lane 1 awards under the U.S. Space Force’s National Security Space Launch Phase 3 contracts.

>> No.16052712

Booster 9 failure mode was more interesting. According to SpaceX, when the booster tried to relight the middle ring of 10 engines, some engines began to shut down one after another until a single engine exploded. This explosion caused a chain reaction, which led to the loss of the booster.

In the update, SpaceX explained the likely reason for this failure was a filter blockage on the inlet of the LOX turbopump for this Raptor engine. A blockage would cut off LOX to the engine and the inlet line, leading to the loss of inlet pressure and the failure of the turbo pump.

no the two most ambitious projects that will happen in our lifetime is the construction of a
>space solar power plants (synchronous orbit 20000 tons, 10km length spacecraft)

It is estimated that these projects will require 300+ launches of a Starship class rocket

The last meme payload was only because no-one wanted to risk their hardware on it. This time around I'm expecting that someone will take Elon up when he comes calling to see if anyone wants a ride, even if it's some cobbled-together student science project that'll probably fail even before it's deployed. People are, however slowly, starting to adapt to just how cheap launch is going to become.

That's what Ivan uses instead of GEO, because their inclination is so far north. They'll put four sats in the same Molniya orbit, six hours apart, so there's always one hanging around above the pole. Unless one fails, that is, then there's an outage at certain times of the day. I've heard that they have had some of those be out in the past few years.
