The thing is... Theism, and specifically Christianity does not hinge on the literal 6 day creation story.

A day can be a time period and not an actual 24hour day, as has been the case elsewhere in the bible.. After-all, a day is only defined by the rotation of the Earth, what is a 'day' before such a concept.

You also have to understand that the bible was not written for just our generation. The book of genesis has existed for many thousands of years. Astronomical numbers would have had little meaning to early civilization. Even the system of writing to represent such numbers did not exist for a long time.

Because of this, Christians are actually more open to where the scientific evidence points then Atheists. After all, evolution is ALL the humanist Atheist religion has. Without evolution, their entire worldview is shattered.

To the humanist, the big bang being correct makes no difference if evolution is untrue. If humans did not evolve they would have to have been created. The big bang is a problem for humanists. The claim that something came from nothing and by nothing is very astounding.

This last resort option is the claim, well maybe nothing used the quantum principles of something from nothing can be applied to the universal scale. This view would assert that the universe may have came into being as it is right now with such an illusion of past with atoms as they are. It concludes anytime in the past (while humans already exist, since evolution is asserted to be false in this discussion) our reality came into being with us present.
