it's an optical illusion. images like this are always fucky when it comes to determining depth; depending how you look at them your brain will interpret the height (and lighting direction) differently. what looks like hills or mountains in the OP image are actually craters. if you look at the larger one in the link you can see that more clearly.
which means that the supposed "shadow" is actually facing the wrong direction. the light is coming from the right, not the left.
