There are numerous papers on morphological associations with relative degrees of male hominid competitiveness with two huge shifts in human morphology corresponding to population bottlenecks. Many hands make light work and those unwilling to work together just get selected out when "more working together" is the successful evolutionary strategy. The largest 3 being ~300 kya, ~75kya (toba catastrophe era, whether that was the cause or not), and the smaller being the neolithic one. None support large shifts toward polygyny, just very harsh selection pressure on male cooperation.

Ranked hierarchies with convenient buckets certainly make reference and designations easier so long as you're not dealing with edge cases or detailed specimen comparison/analysis. Haha yes. I think mostly people just understand "it depends on what you need the tool for as to what tool you are best off using". Since I'm just a utilitarian sort of person on these things it just comes down to what you're doing or using it for. So if you were really drilling down on hypothesis testing then cladistics and monophyly are super important. If you just need the law or a judge to slap a protection on a region you use something else.

Of course paraphyletic groupings and classifications have utility in virology too. I'm not quite up to date on cladistics in horizontal gene transfer and virological classifications I'd have to review that to find out how that's been going
