Stopping SSC has done irreparable damage to the particle physics community in the US.

I can't really tell what side he's taking there. But I think that meme does kind of sum up what people are starting to think it's actually happening, because we hear plans for more accelerators in the media every so often but very little appears to come out of all the money being put in. The outcome of the last Snowmass meeting for long term planning of physics was not good.
>The articles report that two major problems stymied the field: lack of observation of new particles and rocketing costs of ongoing projects
>No unexpected particles were observed in the first 15 years of data-taking at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the highest energy accelerator on Earth—a disappointment stated by many physicists throughout the Snowmass process,[16] and reflecting a view that has also been expressed outside of the Snowmass meetings.[17]
>Although LHC will continue to run with modest upgrades, this lack of discovery leaves no clear focus for the next decade of high energy searches, and may also point to a “nightmare-scenario” where the Standard Model that forms the present basis of particle physics is complete up to the Planck scale (an energy level far beyond the ability of any conceivable experiment to probe) and particle physics “wheeze[s] to its end.”[17]

Really I think we should build more accelerators. Just not for quite a while though. Maybe not for a few centuries. Maybe more effort should be put into researching cost reduction strategies and other methods of experimentation and just general microscopy research and stuff.

Even a collider literally hundreds of millions of miles long does not have enough energy so the whole thing is a con.

who cares? the particle physics community is a bunch of worthless pointless unproductive wasters, they're no better than the astrotards

>> No.15955196

They can't even handle all the data that LHC produces so I don't see the point. The improvements they've made and plan to make for it has also outscaled data capture and storage ability.

Hmmm... perhaps Europe just needs multiple more colliders and then they'll achieve similar results.

>No unexpected particles were observed in the first 15 years of data-taking at the Large Hadron Collider

WTF was the expectation? The theorists had a 50+ year head start to get their math right and the nominal purpose was to prove these theories right to make sure we know wtf is going on. Were some asshole experimentalists really hoping to find some anomaly and make their career off of clickbait "EINSTEIN BTFO" articles?

>cost reduction strategies and other methods of experimentation
wakefield accelerators are going to put these ivory-tower academic dickheads out of business.

>REEE YOU CAN'T JUST BUY AN AFFORDABLE TeV ACCELERATOR AND INSTALL IT IN THE BASEMENT OF YOUR ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT. YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH A MULTIYEAR ULTRACOMPETITIVE PROPOSAL PROCESS, PAY ME EXTORTIONATE AMOUNTS OF MONEY FOR A WEEK OF BEAMTIME ON MY ANCIENT RF ACCELERATOR, AND MAKE ME A CO-AUTHOR ON ALL YOUR PAPERS REEEEE!

He's implying they can actually promise anything. This is a religious expenditure at this point, and I say that knowing that we've had two decent actual confirmations in the smaller colliders.

Bill Clinton was given a choice between funding the SSC or ISS. He knew ISS would be far more popular with the /tv/ consuming public, so that's what he picked. If particlefags want the government to spend more on their toys, they need to start making interesting entertainment for the masses related to their colliders.
