I'm talking about both actual mirrors and whether the "mirror" of reality reflects what actually is in the mind. I haven't come to a conclusion yet but a Buddhist text that says that it cannot be dirtied often comes to mind. I've posted this to /x/ and /lit/ too for the sake of well-roundness.

The actual physical mirror can be trusted, if you study a little about optics you can already predict how something will behave in a mirror as seen from any point, it's all geometry.

>whether the "mirror" of reality reflects what actually is in the mind.
This is weird, you are associating reality with a mirror and the mind with reality.

In Buddhism, the mirror is the mind, which can be dirty or clean, depending on how much you allow yourself to see reality reflect in it, that is, how honest you are about reality.

A mirror produces an image, from Latin "imago", to imitate, to be like something else. The image in the mirror has no agency, it "obeys" reality.

When a magician or filmmaker uses a mirror to create a certain effect, it is not only the mirror that produces that effect, but the fact the mirror is hidden from us, thus creating the supposition that what we are seeing is reality, when it's just an image.

If you look in a mirror you see a fag.

The real question is: in a mirror, where can you kiss yourself? I've done some philosophical contemplation on this for years, and have come to the conclusion that you CAN kiss yourself in the mirror, but only on the lips. I'm looking to publish my findings in a journal, so if you're a professor, reach out to me and we can publish this great revelation.

Also one can answer the similar, if not equally deep question: in a mirror, where can you poke yourself? The answer, of course, is that in a mirror you can poke yourself, but only on the fingertips.

It's cool right? And while a clean mind can help you see reality clearly, the metaphor still implies that even so it is just an image of reality.

Another associated idea in Buddhism is that the mind is like a body of water, when it's turbulent, it's hard to see the bottom, when it's calm, it's easier to see the bottom and reflections in the water.
