15916679 No.15916679 [Reply] [Original]

Sixteen years ago today, Al Gore was awarded the Nobel Science Prize.
At the ceremony he said the world was spinning out of kilter and predicted the Arctic would be ice-free by 2014.
Not only was he wrong, In the years since he received his prize Arctic icepack has only increased.

No, he didn't predict anything, he cited a study that wasn't even finalised by that point. A preprint, if you will. Also, the statement wasn't that "it would happen", but that it "could happen in as little as". If we don't know the upper bounds of the prediction (that not Al Gore made), we cannot say if it turned out true or false. If the statement was "we predict the arctic to be ice free in 7 to 30 years", then it could still be true.
Why are you blaming a politician for citing scientific literature? First of all, why should the statements of a politician be discussed on /sci/ rather than /pol/? Ok, you /pol/tards aren't going anywhere and jannies won't ban you, so let's discuss the fact that a politician cites scientific literature. Isn't this the best thing he can do? What else is a politician supposed to do? Make up shit with a sharpie on a map, contradicting scientific predictions?

Isn't that the same thing as making a prediction ? Like a bookkeeper predicting odds of horses winning a race, then you predicting which horse will win based on their predictions. Some scientists predicted the ice caps would likely melt, then gore predicted that the information was true enough to share with the country. A prediction by proxy. PolitiFact even seems to think it's mostly true

Never understood what Al Gore did to make anyone listen to a single word coming out of his mouth. Ran for president? The guy has no academic or scientific credentials, and given he's a strong proponent of the established academic system, would be the main way he could say his statements have any weight.

No. Definitely not. Let's say your neighbour tells you "Tomorrow I'm gonna shoot up the school". You call the police and say "My neighbour told me he would shoot up the local school tomorrow", who made the threat against the school? You or him? Who will be arrested? Obviously him.
