all else equal outliers will exist simply by random chance. for simplicity sake if it was exactly 5% odds of a significant result being found assuming the null hypothesis (no link) were true by the time you've run 20 trials are around ~64% for "occurring at least once". again just assuming nonconditional randomness for simplicity.
so media ignoring the misses and only focusing on the hits means you've no context of all the negative results and wouldn't know it may just be due to chance in greater context.

it's more complicated than that but that's a start idk how much you care. if all else is not equal and the result is from p-hacking that can be discovered with things like p-curves https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1745691614553988
and other comparisons to test significance in context of broader results

>> No.15910586

>>15910564
>all else equal
that's the part i'm hung up on, green may not in fact be equal to other colors. in this example, just imagine that green dye is the only color out of all of them to be made from some weird brazilian plant that is known to increase sebaceous gland oil production somehow. wouldn't the scientists in the comic, running this same experiment, come to the conclusion that there's a link between green jelly beans and acne? and that dismissing it as "heh, dumb media pundits don't know what a coincidence is" is actually bad science? sounds like the p-curve is the solution to that situation?

>> No.15910605

>>15910586
>that's the part i'm hung up on, green may not in fact be equal to other colors
yeah that's the complicated part but there are ways to deal with it. so like start with normalization https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normalization_(statistics)
and for bias or such you can look at things like p-curves and many more, like z-scores https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_score
and funnel plots for bias detection https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funnel_plot
and confidence intervals https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confidence_interval

like i said i don't know how much you care but you can definitely learn a lot about it and statistics for free. the basics aren't very hard and could be learned in short order. khan academy also has statistics i think if you want to learn about probability and related to start

amounts to roughly something like you can look at the collection of results in context and standardized odds and effect sizes and if it altogether doesn't follow the distribution it should something's fucky about it.

forgot to list here >>15910605 but there's more examples besides with specific tools and methods mentioned on where you'd compare lots of studies https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta-analysis
but you've also got a lot of methods and simulation methods or approaches to test or estimate things like monte carlo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Carlo_method#Applied_statistics

summary is the list is quite large and there are tons of combined ways to test a collection of results or models and results claimed in models none of them are reflected in media which tends to just go "link found" with no mention of the context or even any prior meta-analysis or anything. ignoring the misses because "hits" however likely wrong get clicks

One of the many viruses that cause the “common cold” are Coronavirus(es)

Sars-2, which is a severe Coronavirus (The S in Sars stands for Severe) which is confirmed to fuck up your heart.

So it stands to reason that maybe heart damage is what Coronaviruses do.

Natures balancing mechanic that ensures some groups of people die early and remove themselves from the gene pool.

Brilliant.
