There is no rule that you can divide both sides of an equality by a number, as you do going from lines 4 to 5. In particular, it is not valid to divide by zero, so your steps 4 to 5 fail when a = b. But a = b was your initial assumption, so 5 is just nonsense: you haven't shown it holds when a = b, or when a =/= b.
