N-1 was such a clusterfuck of a project. It was initially designed as a Mars fly-by mission (requires less fuel, believe it or not). Then Korolev died and the Soviet government told the designers that it needs to be a Moon landing now. The whole thing was rushed into oblivion due to such a sudden change and obviously never bore fruit.

It went east and was supposed to splash down north of Hawaii. That's not a full circle around the Earth. I'd draw a shitty diagram, but those aren't allowed here, so have pic related. manned Mars flyby?
if they succeeded in doing that it would be a propaganda mog on the Americans. I doubt the technology was there though. They weren't able to do oxygen and water recycling at the time so keeping a crew alive for the multi year duration would be difficult.

The superheavy booster clearly needs a lot more work. Maybe the structure as currently designed isn't robust enough to handle the loads. In any case it will probably be several years before this thing is flying cargo into space on a regular basis.

>> No.15878758

>>15878750
it has tumbled and now flipped through the atmosphere without breaking apart
the structural integrity is fine (maybe it can be scaled back some to save weight)
something else caused the explosion

>> No.15878773

>>15878758
The superheavy was probably fucked up internally from the shock and vibration of flight plus the hot staging or whatever they call it. After all there isn't a lot of design experience they can fall back on when designing a reusable rocket this large.

Have they even verified the booster can take off, fly to separation altitude and land without carrying a Starship? Seems like they should do that first before doing an integrated flight test of the entire assembly. You know, crawl, walk, run? They could even use a cheap dummy payload like a big water tank in place of Starship if they want to make the test more stringent.
