REAL MATHEMATICIANS I have 5 live cows and then I multiply them by 0. How then do you come and tell me that I end up with 0? Where did the 5 go?

>> No.15842151

You annihilated them.

How can 5 cows exist if they're counted 0?

Lmao

>> No.15842164

You cant multiply cows by anything, just like "adding 3 to the cows" doesnt make it 8 cows, you "add 3 cows" to get to 8. Math describes stuff you did in real life, math itself doesn't do anything. Multiplying the cows by 0 would be something like "I reduced the number of cows to 0% of what I used to have"

you slaughtered them.

>now have 0 chickens
>multiply them by -5
>you have no chickens to replace
>if you did, they would be replaced by IOUs saying you owe someone 5 chickens

That's math-speak for "I sent them to the abattoir." Your cows are now steaks and burgers.

The 5 goes into the 4 chambers of the cows heart in an even split with each chamber getting 1.15.

I don't know what multiplying a cow means. Mathematics deals with numbers, not cows.

These. It's like that picture with the 3+ dimensional graphs saying "I'd like a [helix] of apples, please". On its face it's a nonsense statement, but if that graph predicts apple sales based on a few factors then it's useful to the apple supplier, even if the customer has no understanding of it.

how would you go about multiplying cows by a number?

>> No.15842989

It gets better.

You also have zero giraffes. Zero llamas. Zero TwoGirlsOneCup's occurring in your home (well maybe OP has 1+ of those).

Zero is a symbol, a logical tool. This is why we can get it but animals can't (mostly) and why kiddos have issues with it until they get older.

Non-nuanced answers. Numbers that represent the amount of an object (natural numbers) almost always exclude zero, which while being a real number is a placeholder or additive for other (real) numbers.

Multiplying the natural number of cows you have by zero doesn't work because zero is an additive. So...

#Cows * 0 = #Cows * 0 +0
#Cows * 0 = #Cows * (0+0)
#Cows * 0 = #Cows * (0+0) = #Cows * 0 + #Cows +0
or

#Cows * 0 +0 = #Cows * 0 + #Cows *0

Now simplify by removing #Cows * 0 from each side and what do you get....

#Cows * 0 = 0

This is because I used a real number context of axioms/proof. "Counting" or "Natural" numbering clearly shows this makes no sense though---which is because zero is a unique additive or placeholder which is acts as a door into other mathematical understanding.

bullshit
You can multiply them with a bull

They'd be put into a blender and their forms would come up completely random but the whole form would account for a new universal center.

I miss those trolls. This new "duh, times zero is dumb" troll is so low grade. But hey, at least there are some good answers here, even if it's just pissing into the wind.

Someone is selling cows in batches of five. You buy none of the batches. How many cows do you have?
