Whats going to happen to JWST and the rest of the big government science escapades during the government shutdown? Are they just going to turn it off and stop working? Or are they going to continue burning cash like nothing happened?

The contractors will just run it. Contracts are paid out already so they're completely unaffected. Whoever the contractors are on the Ops Floor will be maintaining it during that time

By 'it' they mean the pre-planned schedule about where it points, what camera to use and for how long. The data is stored and astronomers then simply go and download it.
