there's an arrogance in saying "i will never X or Y", especially in this volatile era

completely focusing on a single thing makes you vulnerable, for one thing. some people might, deep down, be afraid of having real proof that they're worthless, so they find it more comfortable to assume they're worthless than take the plunge.

the other arrogant part is the hidden assumption/inference that "BECAUSE i will never do X or Y, my life is inherently BAD".
the fact that people in these death cults spend a lot of time talking rather than simply killing themselves, suggests that some part of them doesn't or can't accept this, even if the part expressed when they speak DOES accept it.
im not even gonna get into it, but the thing to remember is:
external things can make your life more difficult, but only YOU can make your life BAD.
your brain is a (constantly running) navigation system for a world without absolute truth, which means it's going to create self-fulfilling things CONSTANTLY. you can somehow (soul, willpower, idk) influence which ones it keeps and which ones it discards, and you MUST, otherwise you become a puppet for people with more powerful ideals than you.

as for IQ, i think it has utility, but it has zero value with regard to philosophy. people are misled into using it to make philosophical statements, and then misled into thinking those statements are unalterable when applied to their own lives.
i think it's controversial because it's hard to EXACTLY define what intelligence is, and people argue over it. but there are other reasons (like what i said about it being misused in a certain way), many of which can be observed on this board.
