First year engineering for me had pretty much no engineering classes. Just calculus and programming courses. Sophomore year was the same thing, basically. Shit was easy. It wasn't really until junior year that the courses started getting tougher and the size of my class dropped from like 150 to just 9.

Mechanical engineer here,

First year is mostly prerequisite courses, such as chemistry, calculus, and physics.
Second year is mostly engineering courses, but they are mostly theory based, i.e. Statics, Material Mechanics, Dynamics.
Third year (What I'm in now) is where you start really getting into the real world stuff. For my college, at least, third year is design, advanced theory, and labs.

First year are indeed introductory courses. Varied, interesting stuff (in engineering terms).

Indeed, expect to be studying when others are partying. Expect to be studying when others are sleeping. Expect to be studying when others are eating.

Enjoy doing nothing you thought you would do or that you signed up to do until year 3.

After that, enjoy two years of boring, entry-level stuff until you graduate and go to grad school (if you're legit), where the real engineering begins.
