Quite a bit of really smart posts I've seen on /sci/ honestly (don't take screenshots ever though). It's all diluted by the large number of very stupid posts, but I've been on most online forums as well as most boards of 4chan at this point, and I can say with confidence that /sci/ has the most number of redeemable people. Though they are still a meagre proportion of the total population here. I've genuinely learned some stuff here among all the shitty posts. Like finding gold in a heap of shit. Whereas all other boards don't even have that gold, just a pure heap of shit.

If the jannies did a better job and shut off all the philosophy and /lit/ posting, as well as all the politics and /pol/ posting (& also, especially IQposting), we might have a really nice board, to an unprecedented degree on the internet. Having only quality posters would attract even more quality posters. And before you know it, /sci/ could become mainstream in discourse. Many good things could come of it. But as it is right now very little interesting things come from 4chan. Interesting in the scienctific sense, not talking about memes and stuff.

The reason people go on 4chan rather than other forums is because it's built for shitposting and has negligible censorship. You don't have to maintain any professional demeanor and if you want to come across as intelligent then you need to say something insightful. The good posters you're talking about are choosing 4chan for exactly the same reason as everyone else, and taking away that reason will drive them elsewhere. For the most part, the properly insightful posters aren't isolated autodidactic geniuses but rather people with phds, industry experience, or just intelligent undergrads who will slot into academia if they so desire. 4chan doesn't cultivate any unique set of people except insofar as its chaos and shittiness creates a unique appeal.

Also, for what it's worth, stupid posts can elicit rigorous responses better than any stupid or open ended question. Especially on an anonymous forum where people get a kick out of being rude.

/sci/ has been overrun by /pol/ tourists following at least three waves (gaymergate, US elections, and ban of incel subleddits). The quality of posting here is lower than on quora aka the place where Indians go to larp as rocket scientists.
The math general has at least 2-3 posters who know graduate-level mathematics. I guess it's because shitposting about it isn't as accessible as making philosophical anti-agenda rants about entanglement, AI, IQ, COVID, and the favourite boogeyman of trannies/faggots.

I used to often post serious shit here (mostly related to math and QFT) when I was still in uni, now I'm just here to help those rare naive anons who come here to better understand some math concepts.
If I do have a lot of free time and willing to do latex formatting, I'd rather just go to stackexchange. It's a bureaucratic cesspool of its own, but at least a lot of people know what they are talking about there (at least in graduate- and research-level math).

It all makes much more sense once you remember that a lot of posters here are still teens or at best in their early 20s, and have been largely lured by the anti-woke fleur of 4chin. Wouldn't expect that to correlate with any intelligence indicator.
