>A farmer wants to build a new enclosure for his livestock. He purchases supplies for a new fence and invites his friends - a physicist, an engineer, and a mathematician - to come out to the farm and help him decide on a new layout.
>"It seems to me," the physicist ponders, "that you want the largest enclosure for your livestock for the given perimeter available. It is trivially obvious, then, that a circular enclosure would be best."
>"Now wait just a minute," interrupts the engineer, pulling out a map of the farm, "a circular enclosure is good, but we can further improve on it by taking advantage of the existing buildings."
>The two discuss their plans with the farmer before the three of them settle on a layout they feel is optimal. The physicist and engineer, being no strangers to the application of theory, roll up their sleeves and get to work helping their friend assemble his new enclosure.
>The mathematician, who has been quiet during this whole exchange, walks over to the pile of fencing materials, feebly makes a small square out of some two-by-fours and smugly declares, to no one in particular,
