Just try "bar" and be done with it. You should write your essay not stop in this nonsense timewaste. The "superconductor" arxiv pdf is made by fucking msword.exe

Right, this works only as a band-aid solution. The expression that I am trying to write is V_n, so using that small space in front of V to offset the bar leaves a space between the V and the subscript. I'm honestly baffled that LaTeX is so incomplete as to not have a working overline feature. Now I need to learn the inner workings of the language and construct my own macro. This is the same language that purported to be a more sensible macro rich environment over its plain TeX predecessor. What a fucking joke. I'd rather stick with plain TeX and write all of my own macros out instead then. Why bother with the ugly verbose syntax of LaTeX only to get shafted by it at every turn.

Obviously bar is indented only for one character. It is distracting how small and obviously incorrect it appears.

It's the average [math]\LaTeX[/math]™© experience. To solve minor inconveniences, you have to go through pages of stackexchange to figure out what's wrong. In the end you just have to learn latex even if you don't want to waste time on that garbage.
