Hey /sci/,

I'm interested in attending a university and majoring in physics. I would like to think I have a great understanding of the basics, and I've done plenty of research on my own into more advanced topics because... well, it's just fucking interesting.

There is, however, a problem. I'm a 21-year-old high school dropout with a GED (I scored above the 95th percentile, but that's not the point). I'm also a schizophrenic, which is the main reason for me not finishing school. I have no real issues with comprehension, I just find it next to impossible to finish my work, which obviously hinders my chances of being successful in an academic setting. No, it's not me "being lazy," it's an actual symptom of schizophrenia. I'm on medication, but so far I haven't found one that alleviates this particular problem.

So, on to the actual questions. What do I have to do? If I obtain an associate's degree at a community college or something, rape the SAT, and just overall do my absolute best, would I have a shot at attending a university? Do they offer student loans that big, and if not, how would I afford tuition? Is physics even a good field to go into in terms of job availability and whatnot? How long of a degree would I have to pursue to assure a decent career?

Lastly, is this even an undertaking worth considering, given the large chance of failure my mental disorder creates?

Any help would be appreciated.

How did you finish typing this out if you're schizophrenic. Trollololol.

>> No.1556948

studying physics requires alot of mental stamina

if you have trouble finishing things for whatever reason its not for you

Thanks for the honest answer.

I mean, I would like to think I would be interested enough in the subject to do well... but you can never predict how things like this will go.

Shameless bump.

CAPTCHA is half in Arabic. I don't have my Arabic keyboard plugged in right now, moot.

so true.

OP, go for it. I suggest going to a Comm. College first just to get your feet wet. Start out by taking a few College credits at first. Between 8 and 12. That way, you'll comprehend the rigor needed for part-time / full-time college work and you're not pressuring yourself too much. Comm. College gives you a chance to pace yourself since deadlines aren't as rushed as 4yr Universities/Colleges. If you take advantage of everything there, you can study hard and learn your subject(s) VERY well. Most Comm. Colleges are hiring more professors, too, from respectable Universities, so you have an edge in that department too.

Just take your time, be patient, and try to focus as much as possible.

Physics is just theoretical engineering.

Take some ADHD meds. You'll be able to concentrate on your work and remember o do it a week before it is actually due. Also you retain most if not all information that comes from going to class.

Its a very wonderful drug.

herp.

actually, i think engineering is regularly defined as applied physics.

admittedly, engineers never learn as much math as physicists, but they do learn how to actually use their minimal skills in mathematics to solve real world problems (eg software is a major part of their education)

I understand that it's going to be a long grind, and I know that it may end up being a waste of time... but I'm not happy with doing nothing in life and this is probably my one chance to make something happen. I also think that if I keep concentrating on this being my ONLY chance, I can keep myself in line.

What sort of job would a bachelor's in physics get me? Fetching coffee for masters and doctors, or something actually worthwhile?
