Why is this allowed? I spent my childhood believing in those colorful space pictures.

You know, some of that shit really is colorful. Here's a picture I took of the Orion Nebula through my own telescope.
I haven't fucked with the color.

Well that is kinda weird self own for being low IQ, you have eyes and can look up you know. More to the point I fail to see what the problem is. The color of space features has no bearing on life. Your knowledge on them won't be tested during your life nor will it have any impact anyhow. It's like complaining how a video game you have never played had a different color scheme in the 3rd level than you thought, simply asinine.

It helps demonstrate the form when you blast the contrast & colour like that. "We colourshifted and light adjusted the photo to look nicer" is never a fun disclaimer for kids either to be fair.

The sky color in Super Mario Bros was a unique color that was made with NTSC color decoding.
Therefor it appears slightly different on every CRT but most it importantly appears WRONG on new LCD TVs.

Then you are dumb af. Color doesn't exist, it is an subjective interpretation of a variation in wavelength.

These are infrared measurements by the NIRCAM sensors. You color shift these according to each sensor wavelength and then compose these into a sngle image.

https://jwst-docs.stsci.edu/jwst-near-infrared-camera/nircam-instrumentation/nircam-filters

If you want a more realisic version you take Hubbe; that one uses measurements wthin our visible spectum.

These will always be post-worked on for the sake of selling a nice picture, like you would with any photographic work.

Well pretty much all astrophotography of colorful nebulae is dishonestly enhanced by very long exposures + image stacking. While it does show what's "there", the reality is much dimmer and not anywhere near as pretty.
