Scientifically speaking, why do humans look younger these days?

You associate certain facial features with "old people" because all the old people you saw in your formative years had those features. That's why, when you look at high school yearbooks from the 50s, everyone looks middle aged but (if you're old enough) you can look at college graduates of today and they look like babies.

Less lead in the air/water, less constant exposure to tobacco smoke, better skin care/sunscreen, etc.

Less sun exposure via more time spent indoors

High neoteny via Low testosterone levels

Fatter face gives youthful look

More self-care (skincare etc.) via an obsession with looking younger

That's because testosterone levels are dropping across the world due to 100 years of bioaccumulation of hormonal birth control in the water supply in addition to plastics and other pollutants.

It's literally just a recurrent perception bias, people have been making this exact same complaint for thousands of years.

>Studies show that men’s testosterone levels have been declining for decades. The most prominent, a 2007 study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, revealed a “substantial” drop in U.S. men’s testosterone levels since the 1980s, with average levels declining by about 1% per year. This means, for example, that a 60-year-old man in 2004 had testosterone levels 17% lower than those of a 60-year-old in 1987. Another study of Danish men produced similar findings, with double-digit declines among men born in the 1960s compared to those born in the 1920s.

I bet you watched that fucking Vsauce video which is why you're using terms like "recurrent perception bias" lmao

I don't watch ecelebs, I'm just using correct terminology to describe a bias that people have in their perception which has recurred, generation after generation, since prehistory.

It's worrisome, and there are undoubtedly ways it impacts facial feature development, but it's a phenomenon that goes back almost as far as human history. There was a Roman historian (I don't remember if it was Pliny or Cato, I always get them confused) who said something to the same effect. "kids these days still look like children even after they've reached "maturity"!"

NTA, but you are failing to address the question. Testosterone levels have been dropping for decades. There's a pretty large body of evidence demonstrating as much. You keep bringing up the possibility of a recurrent perceptual bias, which also seems reasonable, but that doesn't really refute the other anons point as you seem to think. Both of those explanations seem pretty plausible, and it seems like both factors could be contributing to this phenomenon. These are not incompatible hypothesis. It could very well be the case that people have always had this sort of perceptual bias, and yet it could still be the case younger people today really do look younger than previous generations due to environmental changes that have effected their testosterone levels. Logically speaking, these are not incompatible claims. Now of course, the extent to which each of these variable is contributing to this phenomenon is a different matter, but that really an entirely empirical question. If you want to refute the argument that testosterone declines are responsible, as you are attempting to do, then you'll need to directly refute the argument.

Put simply, air-conditioning.
Look at people today who live without modern central A/C and you notice they age faster still.
