most nobel prizes are not significant. many of them are just earned via nepotism.

Because the Nobel Committe, at least in the modern era are incredibly conservative and only award prizes for theories that have been categorically proven to be true. That is why they are often awarded many decades after the original discovery and when so many of the discovers are already dead.
