Human languages are a big waste of time. What do I get if I dedicate the time to becoming fluent in French? Nothing of value, or practical use.

I'm not saying don't study them, I'm just advising that studying them should be viewed as more of a hobby activity than something genuinely useful. If you do it, it should be competing with time you'd otherwise spend watching TV or playing videogames and not competing against time used for more important purposes than those.

if you are smart enough to pursue a career in natural sciences or mathematics, recognizing very commonly occuring patterns in language families and memorizing words in and out of context should be a breeze.

the ability to communicate with 80 million people in their native language?
granted they are unfortunate enough to speak fr*nch so it's probably not worth associating with their kind anyway

What value does this add over speaking to them in English? I'm sure there are probably old people or people in rural areas that don't speak English, but for the most part "how do I talk to the French?" has already been solved by teaching the French to speak English. Any remaining holes can get paved over by AIs that understand French.

It just seems like learning more human languages is a pointless use of a human's time, outside recreation.

Just because they speak enough English to get by doesn't mean that they're completely fluent in it. Bridging the gap makes communication easier for both sides

All foreign languages are useless because they all learned English for some reason. Even spics living in the favela know it.

I learned some Greek to aid in Bible study. If you ever get deep in to Biblical Exegesis, I recommend getting some familiarity with Greek and Hebrew grammar (and if you really want to be esoteric, Aramaic). A lot of biblical commentaries use the Greek and Hebrew languages to base their analyses off of, so knowing how those languages differ form English is very useful.

Its useful to work with foreigners on a daily basis and to understand the country, to know their media, jokes, laws. Not every conversation has to be about baggete de fromage

No one's saying it's useless if you're actually living there. Of course that's useful, but learning it if you want to remain living in your own country is pointless.

so, we must learn several languages to be able to speak with several peoples, unnecessarily, just because one day we can meet a person who doesn't know enough english to have a conversation, and without internet to be able to translate with him? I don't know about you, but I found this very unnecessary.

If you wanted to learn to talk to people in France who don't speak English, wouldn't Arabic be more useful?

Spanish, German, and Japanese.
I grew up speaking Spanish at home, learnt a bit of German to talk to my German-born grandfather, and learnt Japanese to read untranslated loli-themed h-manga.
