Really it's a miracle we figured it out at all when we were basically still monkes in every other field.

For real though, what do the people that make these images think we'll be using for energy one day? Harrypotterium-powered reactors?
We've drilled down to the motherfucking nucleus of the atom, to the fundamental building blocks of matter, to extract energy. How much deeper do these "dude clean energy LMAO" types think we can go?

No, i know exactly what it means. Its the retarded joke that all our power generation has to boil water when it clearly isnt true.

that's fission. the whole point of fusion is you take two things and force them together into one. you end up with less stuff than you started and therefore less radioactive particles to explode all over the place.
like where do you think radiation comes from? it comes from obliterating the parts of the atom that would instead be producing helium in a fusion reaction.

>like where do you think radiation comes from? it comes from obliterating the parts of the atom that would instead be producing helium in a fusion reaction.
Look man you obviously absorbed your understanding of fusion from popsci. Yes combining atoms create tons of radiation. If it was just gamma rays that would be fine but it releases high energy neutrons too, it's not all nucleons that end up producing ash. Deuterium-Tritium, Deuterium-Deuterium, proton-proton like the Sun it doesn't matter. Helium-3 does as well but less so. I think there's one mechanism that is truly aneutronic (proton-lithium?) but it produces far, far less energy. Generally alternatives to deuterium-tritium have loads of different drawbacks so that's why all the major researchers focus on t-d for power generation.
So turns out if it didn't produce neutrons (pure) fusion would be even less workable because there wouldn't be any way for the reactor to breed its own tritium.
Now if everything inside the reactor chamber is being rekt by neutrons it's all going to be turned into med-level waste by the end of its lifespan all the elements in the shielding, cooling tubes, coils etc get transmuted into radioactive shit.
But this is STILL not enough because the neutron stoichiometry of reaction/breeding doesn't balance out, so you'll also need some sort of fuel breeding blanket (beryllium/lithium) to get even more neutrons before they then breed enough fuel so the whole system can be self sustaining. If of course a positive engineering gain is achievable.
Now, the "high level" waste part. I made it the fuck up. It's just that the breeding blanket will be fucking radioactive even after removing all the tritium but I have no idea by how much or for how long.

some fraction of course, just meant all the parts inside the reactor will be subject this problem to a lesser or greater extent
