When I was in 11th grade I was fully set on going to college for accounting. I had it all planned out. I'd been taking accounting in school for the last year and was easily the best in the class, my teacher loved me and encouraged me to pursue it as a career. I didn't particularly enjoy it but because I was so good at it I figured it would be a good idea.
The following summer Netflix added Cosmos with Neil Degrasse Tyson and I decided to check it out one night. I instantly fell in love with science. Throughout the course of the summer I probably watched the series 10+ times.
When it came time to pick my classes for senior year, I really wanted to take physics. But there was an issue. The only physics class my school offered ran at the same time as advanced accounting. I could only pick one. Ultimately I decided to abandon my life plan and chose physics.
I'm so happy I did. Not only was I still easily the best in the class, I also enjoyed it as well. I ended up deciding to major in it in college, and then added Electrical Engineering as a double major, and now I'm working as an engineer making six figures at a large aerospace company that you've definitely heard of. Life is awesome.
I'll sometimes see on Facebook how the lives of my former classmates that decided to pursue accounting are going and it looks fucking awful. I can't believe I was so close to opting for a life of mediocrity. I hope AI takes their jobs so they can be forced to try and not be such fucking losers.
