Honestly, I kind of hate this idea because it gave origin to our current planetary defense measures that slow down exploration.
Someone should put forward a panspermia/planetary defense experiment where they send a spacecraft with multiple microorganisms in varied levels of protection against the space elements, let it orbit in deep space for a while being blasted with radiation and everything else, them return everything back to Earth and see what survived the journey.
If it turns out it is very hard for unmanned probes to bring live microorganisms into other planets/moons, this would be amazing for future probes.

Well As you see I have a long name and it's a system. "Space Elevator" has the most brand recognition so I use that phrase, however there will be no base station on the crust of the Earth. That is the real issue engineering wise with the idea. Once you take that out it's much easier.

Lifting such a large mass by electrically interacting with the magnetosphere is out so it will have to be the latter two. You can use high Isp electric thrusters since you're in vacuum but large amounts of propellant will still be needed. I like the concept but don't over sell it

I thought of the simple idea we could have space based lasers on the Earth and shoot solar sails attached to the sky hook station and add huge amounts of energy to the system that way to counter act the momentum lost from lifting objects out of the gravity well. They are already working on Earth based laser to propel solar sails to deep space missions. We could beam limitless energy into space that has zero mass to work against. Compared to lifting rocket fuel or even nuclear fuel into space. Proving my point once again that any real issues brought up with the idea are often easy to over come.

Space elevators are dumb. If we simply had a space elevator, it'd be great, but the logistics of making one outweight the benefits. Any infrastructure capable of putting a space elevator into orbit is capable of putting payloads into orbit (the payloads that the elevator was supposed to lift)
So instead of building an elevator to bring your stuff into orbit, just bring your stuff into orbit.
I think the return on investment, in terms of kg to leo, would never be reached with an elevator. Far better to have ssto rockets.
The reason space elevators trigger me so much is that they're essentially magic. They're physically impossible with current materials, maybe we'll develop something exotic that will work in the future, but we don't know of anything now.
