In europe being more white than the average was perceived as beautiful in the medieval ages because it was an indicator of not having to work (in the fields outside).

It’s actually because of light that we prefer light skin. Firstly, pale skin is just easier to see, and so darker skin gives a sense of uneasiness the harder it is to see you, say, during the evening, but generally, at all times of day. This is also why, say Sweden, partly has a racial fetish for blacks, because they are very rare in Scandinavia and so are seen as exotic. Bring a White person to Africa and it is the same thing, no knowledge of White or Black necessary, just the rarity itself becomes a commodity.
