At Argo, we are building infrastructure for the future of space. The next great leap beyond Earth requires re-imagining in-space transportation, transitioning to a new paradigm of abundant, unconstrained movement.

We are untethering space operations from Earth by leveraging the moon’s shallow gravity well and accessible water resources. Argo will harvest lunar water and use it as propellant to create a true in-space transportation network. By sourcing propellant from the moon, we will provide the freedom to maneuver throughout space.

This freedom will expand the possibilities for businesses in space and support permanent human presence beyond Earth. Harnessing Lunar water will help open a new era of affordable space activity and propel us further into the final frontier.

https://techcrunch.com/2023/04/13/ispace-tokyo-stock-exchange/

>ispace, a company with a spacecraft en route to the moon, is now trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

>The Japanese firm raised around $52 million (¥6.7 billion) in an initial public offering last month. Shares reportedly went untraded on the first listing day due to a large volume of buy orders and demand to hold shares, Reuters reported. But today, shares have soared, with stock selling at ¥1,135, or more than four times the ¥254 offering price.

>If successful, the firm will join the United States, China and Russia as the only entities to have landed spacecraft on the moon.

>ispace has been working on lunar technology for over a decade, officially forming into a company after operating as Team Hakuto in the Google Lunar X Prize competition. ispace CEO Takeshi Hakamada told TechCrunch during a panel at TC Sessions: Space last year that it’s been a long road to launch.

>“Twelve years is a long time to survive,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of ups and downs.”

>Through that decade plus, ispace managed to raise more than $235 million in private capital from investors including Airbus Ventures, Japan’s Incubate Fund, and former chief strategy officer of SoftBank Group Katsunori Sago. The company’s also landed partnerships with Japan’s national space agency, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and will deliver a rover for the agency on this first Hakuto-R mission.

>ispace is already planning its second mission to the moon for next year. A third mission in 2025, which is in development with engineering giant Draper, is part of a $73 million NASA contract to deliver scientific payloads to the lunar surface. For that third mission, ispace is serving as a subcontractor and design agent.

ahem

Spaceflight is a meme until we have discovered anti-gravity. All resources spent on space flight today are a massive waste and should have flown into building particle accelerators and educating a generation of particle physicists to brute force the discovery of anti-gravity effects. From the moment we have anti-gravity, space travel is peanuts. Trying to make space flight feasable with giant rockets is a massive waste of time.

Bad organizational design, infighting, insufficient funding, and technical debt meant that neither Zond nor the N1/L3 program succeeded. Korolev died and Mishin proved unequal to the task. The N1/L3 was simultaneously underfunded and the most expensive space effort yet undertaken by the USSR. The end of the space race (~1970) meant cutbacks in budget and ambition. The most important projects after that point were the Salyut and Mir stations and Buran Energia. Collapse of the USSR meant another reduction in funding and scope to servicing crewed stations, putting up satellites for the Russian government, and commercial launches. Retirements, interference, and economic reorganizations further sapped the industry, and the Russian federal government had no need or real desire for anything more than servicing LEO with iterations on launch systems already in use. There are constant projects announced/put into some sort of design stage, but those projects' success is not strictly required so many of them ultimately come to nothing.
And of course, it's afflicted by the standard Russian governance problems.

From Berger's Rocket Report this evening:

SpaceX may lease High Bay 1 in NASA's VAB. Last August NASA issued an agency announcement asking for industry proposals to lease the Vehicle Assembly Building High Bay 1 at Kennedy Space Center. This is the same iconic building in Florida where NASA stacks its Space Launch System rocket. In November, NASA selected a proposal. However, agency spokeswoman Patti Bielling declined to name the winner, telling Ars that terms are still being negotiated, and "the process does not conclude until the parties execute the lease, at which time NASA will announce the selection."

Starship processing ... I bring this up because two people have told me that SpaceX won the competition to use the high bay for its Starship program. The sources said SpaceX does not plan to perform stacking operations inside the VAB, but rather will use the facility for storage and integration of payloads on Starship before flight. This might be an interim usage by SpaceX while the company develops a larger facility on Roberts Road near the Florida spaceport. It sounds like SpaceX will continue to build Starships in South Texas and ship them to Florida for the time being.

Column A is the total number of Starships built and available on Earth for use. It assumes that SpaceX will build Starships at a rate of one per month per year. It takes into account Starships on Mars and when they will be available based on transfer windows. Transfer windows are every 26 months. Each transfer window the Starships sent to Mars are taken away from the total and the Starships sent to Mars the transfer window before last are added back to the total to be used again.
Column B is half of the total number of Starships, assuming that half of all Starships will be used for non-Mars activity. It is rounded down to the nearest multiple of 4 for simplicity of calculation.
Column C is 75% of the number of Starships reserved for Mars. It is assumed that 25% of the ships will be tanker ships and will not be sent to Mars. This is the number used to calculate the number of Starships to take away and add each transfer window.
Column D is the number of cargo Starships sent to Mars.
Column E is the total mass in tons sent to Mars that transfer window. The number at the very bottom is the total mass sent to Mars ever.
Column F is the number of crew Starships sent to Mars. It is assumed that 1/3 ships sent will be for colonists and that crew Starships carry no cargo for Mars.
Column G is the number of people sent to Mars that launch window, assuming 25 people per Starship.
Column H is the number of people at Mars, assuming half of the previous batch return to Earth each transfer window.
By this estimate we can see that by 2050 SpaceX will have sent 372,400 tons to Mars and will have 17,141 people on Mars.

Soviet names are kind of cool. Imagine naming your capsule Soyuz TMA-M.
It’s fun how they just add K, D, R, or V to a rocket or spacecraft. And then they add another letter, and then another. (Yes, the Cyrillic alphabet is different; it looks cool is all I’m saying).
Soviet tanks are the kind of this though. T-90A, M, MS, S, and then T-80 BVMU. What the fuck is up with these added letters?

>> No.15350557

>>15350551
Also for reference, not all Cyrillic letters line up with English ones:
C = V
H = V

This explains why Soyuz 2 goes from A, B, V. Because it’s the third letter.
The hydrogen upgraded Angara second stage is called URM-2V, because V is the letter for H.

Beyond the vastness of the Milky Way,
Two great powers rose to seize the day,
POCKOCMOS and POGOZIH, their names renowned,
Their space program superiority forever crowned.

Elon Musk and SpaceX had a different goal,
A Mars colonization project, their mission to unfold,
But POCKOCMOS and POGOZIH had already been,
Established in space, their greatness never to be seen.

Their ships were swift, their technology grand,
Their astronauts brave, their missions well planned,
Their colonies thrived, their power immense,
POCKOCMOS and POGOZIH reigned supreme hence.

Elon Musk and SpaceX tried to keep up,
But their progress was slow, their funding abrupt,
Their dreams of colonizing Mars faded away,
As POCKOCMOS and POGOZIH had won the day.

Their colonies stood strong, their technology sound,
Their ships explored space, their astronauts renowned,
POCKOCMOS and POGOZIH had no match,
Their space program superiority was beyond catch.

And so the universe looked on in awe,
As POCKOCMOS and POGOZIH reigned without flaw,
Their space program superiority forever etched,
In the history of the cosmos, forever stretched.

Elon Musk and SpaceX could only watch,
As POCKOCMOS and POGOZIH continued to notch,
Their achievements grand, their power immense,
Their space program superiority forever intense.

And so the epic tale was told,
Of POCKOCMOS and POGOZIH's space program bold,
And how they reigned supreme over Elon Musk and SpaceX,
Their superiority forever enshrined, never to be perplexed.

Juice is unironically the best science mission since Cassini-Hyugens, even better than Europa Clipper since it will actually enter Ganymede's orbit which is a first. For now, yes. They were about to launch their meme EcoRocket in 2021-22, but they supposedly didn't have the proper loicense and the Romanian FAA cucked them. They went under the radar for some time promising to launch it soon(tm). Then disappeared, some social media accounts vanished, reappeared again some months ago with the Kerbal OTRAG 2.0 rocket, then vanished again. Maybe if Popescu had billions of dollars like Musk he could make some of his ideas work, instead of relying on gypsy esotericism.

> Ganymede (or Jupiter III) is the largest and most massive natural satellite of Jupiter as well as in the Solar System, being a planetary-mass moon. It is the largest Solar System object without an atmosphere, despite being the only moon of the Solar System with a magnetic field.

>Ganymede is composed of approximately equal amounts of silicate rock and water. It is a fully differentiated body with an iron-rich, liquid core, and an internal ocean that may contain more water than all of Earth's oceans combined.[17][18][19][20] Its surface is composed of two main types of terrain. Dark regions, saturated with impact craters and dated to four billion years ago, cover about a third of it. Lighter regions, crosscut by extensive grooves and ridges and only slightly less ancient, cover the remainder.

It's the most interesting jovian moon after Europa while having the benefit of not being turbo raped by radiation. Callisto is the most boring ass one by far and IO is just a volcanic sulfur hell with no possibility of life. And you can't go into orbit around Europe without having your spacecraft fried to death. Callisto is the most boring, but it is also the only place we could start a colony in the Jovian system. The others have surface radiation that will kill you easily because of Jupiters radiation belt, except Callisto which is outside of it. In this way, it would be better if it finished by orbitting Callisto to find primo landing spots to set up an outpost in the far future. Also, if you ever wanted to study how the solar system formed, Callisto would be where you go. Yes, it is the most boring moon but it does have aspects that would actually make it the best moon to orbit (if we REAAALLLY have to send an orbiter instead of a rover to the Jovian system)

BIG NEWS BIG NEWS

Eric Berger : Quite obviously this did not happen. However, generally, there remains confidence that a license is forthcoming for SpaceX when it is needed—i.e. before 7 am CT on Monday morning. A license could be issued any time, any day, including weekends.

SpaceX could literally launch within minutes of receiving a launch license from the FAA. Every indication from the company and FAA (i.e. road closures, flight restrictions) indicate that planning moving toward a Monday morning launch attempt.

Whether this all comes together? Who knows. But behind the scenes everyone is working toward that, and expectant. SpaceX will conduct technical readiness meetings this weekend to ensure they're ready to proceed. So a few snags remain possible. But this is probably happening.

i know its not the thread for this kind of question but ... Neutron Stars are just close enough to be a black hole . The question is , if we still keep adding mass and maintaining the radius , there will be a point where the surface escape velocity is higher than c , thus creating a event horizon , ¿thus creating a black hole?

And more , if the is a Neutron Star that is close to be a black hole , the center of that Neutron start could have its own Even horizon ?

Long before an event horizon forms there is a radius at which no finite pressure can hold the star up. Neutron stars are just barely above this limit. When they rise above it they begin to collapse, so you can't have a partial black hole. You also could never form an event horizon inside, as there would be nothing supporting the rest of the star above.

>> No.15351929

@joroulette (Space reporter Reuters) : The FAA this week has been expecting to issue SpaceX’s license on Thurs or Friday, pending completion of one environmental item related to Starship’s splashdown zones, per two people close to mission planning. One source says that item is pretty much complete and today is likely

The extra attention to the remaining environmental item (by agencies other than the FAA) is partially because officials worry local environmental groups might protest or lodge a court injunction over the license, so they’re proceeding carefully.

The main environmental group raising concerns about the licensing process, Save RGV, has been critical of the agencies’ transparency, but members say they don’t expect to sue partially because they don’t have enough information, and have allocated legal efforts elsewhere.

So whether SpaceX launches on Monday hinges primarily on the timing of the launch license, which is expected today but could come later than that, and Starship’s technical readiness, which Musk says is locked in. Things could always change

>> No.15351930

Incorporated in December 2019, Save RGV is a non-profit corporation organized for educational and environmental advocacy to promote environmental justice and sustainability through addressing the causes and consequences of climate change that affect the health and well-being of the entire Rio Grande Valley community. Our methods include, but are not limited to, promoting the use and development of renewable energy, opposing polluting industries such as LNG terminals, pipelines and other fossil fuel development, monitoring and preserving wildlife habitat, protecting air quality, researching and publishing information to increase public awareness and understanding, reviewing and commenting on projects to appropriate regulatory agencies, and participating in common law or statutory based litigation to further these aims.

Better the gimballing raptors be able to compensate for this dangerous tendency.

• The FAA will use key mission "tiggers" such as the loading of rocket fuel and the final disposition of the booster rocket to pinpoint when to close and reopen airspace.
• For the first time, the FAA will implement time-based procedures for a launch from Boca Chica. This will identify and reroute only the aircraft directly affected by the closed airspace allowing more aircraft to stay on their most optimal and efficient routes. It has previously only been used for launches from the Florida space coast.
• Both the Starship vehicle and the Super Heavy booster rocket will transmit telemetry data to the FAA via the Space Data Integrator tool. Data such as position, altitude, speed and any deviation from its expected flight

FAA knows where
The FAA knows where Starship is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation.
