What are good fields for a basement dweller to become an autodidact in? Needs to be a field that doesn't require massive capital/connections to produce something useful or profitable. Can be extremely niche or difficult, I just need a goal to dedicate my time to.

The obvious answer is math, and if you're specifically interested in practical applicability, you could look into cryptography.
The textbook of Katz and Lindell is a good introduction for serious students, and for an applied slant I'd supplement it with the "graduate course in applied cryptography" of Boneh and Shoup (draft available online).
