Why do people become tripfags? Are they insecure that the value of their contributions is too small? Are they in that strange place between "discovering the internet" and "not yet on facebook"?

Let's look at it scientifically. An identity, even a loose one like a trip, adds nothing to an argument. So it cannot be to add any credence to their comments. But then, why else would you do it? Do they think that they can become ad hoc authorities if they flood enough? But appealing to an authority is a fallacy, so even if they were to somehow become anonymous authorities, it would be meaningless in /sci/.
