15316057 No.15316057 [Reply] [Original]

According to OpenAI's latest research paper, mathematicians are at very high risk of being replaced by AI (despite their models, so far, doing poorly at non-baby math).

How does /sci/ respond?

computers have been set to replace mathematicians since they were invented, and yet, we're still here
the only replacement it's doing is on the tedious arithmetic that calculators were designed for

The 100% value along with the text at the bottom that states that there would be a 50% increase in efficiency, meaning there's 100% chance there would be a 50% increase in efficiency, most likely would be a lot of mathematicians made redundant at their workplace. Especially in areas where they're doing client work, because there's only so many clients so the increase in efficiency means the employer could do the same amount of work with half the number of employees and there might not be more clients with enough work to keep the same staff numbers

OpenAI is a bunch of people that engage in unethical tactics while claiming they can be trusted with essentially using "AI ethics" as a weapon to hurt people.
They seem demented.
I'm not surprised that they're trying to pick a fight with mathematicians.
I think the issue is: you aren't really allowed to know who employs the mathematicians, because you KNOW the NSA uses them to maintain an edge in military encodings, and you aren't allowed to know that.
So, yes, OpenAI may be accurate, but you aren't allowed to, you know, watch the results.

I don't think so. Like, calculators have been around and it didn't yeet mathematicians. I know calculators have limits, but mathematicians held an important job. Also you mention it did poorly on non-baby math. Many websites, apps have been made to mimick mathematicians and answers all your algeb and calculus questions but it never replaced mathematicians. Not sure in the future tho.

ChatGPT gave an answer

First, we will simplify the integrand by using the identity: arcos(cos(x)) = x for x in [0, pi]. Therefore,

arcos(cos(x)/(1+2cos(x))) = x/(1+2cos(x))

Now, we can solve the integral by using the substitution u = cos(x), which gives:

dx = -du/sqrt(1-u^2)
cos(x) = u
cos(x)/(1+2cos(x)) = u/(1+2u)

Therefore, the integral becomes:

integral from 0 to 1 of (-1/sqrt(1-u^2)) * (x/(1+2cos(x)))du

= integral from 0 to 1 of (-x/sqrt(1-u^2)) * (1/(1+2u))du

Now, we use another substitution: v = sqrt(1-u^2), which gives:

du = -v/sqrt(1-v^2) dv
x = arcsin(v)

The integral becomes:

integral from 0 to 1 of (-arcsin(v)/v) * (1/(1+2(1-v^2))) * (-v/sqrt(1-v^2)) dv

= integral from 0 to 1 of arcsin(v) / (v(3v^2-2)) dv

This integral can be solved by partial fractions. We write:

arcsin(v) / (v(3v^2-2)) = A/v + B/(3v^2-2)

Multiplying both sides by v(3v^2-2) and substituting v = sqrt(2/3) and v = 0, we obtain:

A = -sqrt(2)/6
B = sqrt(2)/3

Therefore, the integral becomes:

integral from 0 to 1 of (-sqrt(2)/6) * (1/v) + (sqrt(2)/3) * (3v^2-2)^(-1) dv

= -sqrt(2)/6 * ln(v) + sqrt(2)/3 * (1/3) * ln|3v^2-2| between 0 and 1

= -sqrt(2)/6 * ln(1) + sqrt(2)/3 * (1/3) * ln(1) - (-sqrt(2)/6 * ln(sqrt(2)/3) + sqrt(2)/3 * (1/3) * ln(1))

= sqrt(2)/9 * ln(3/2)

Therefore, the integral between 0 and pi/2 of arcos(cos(x)/(1+2cos(x)))dx is equal to sqrt(2)/9 * ln(3/2).
