For animals it's the absence of neurological activity. For other stuff like single celled organisms death is harder to define.

A step.
A gateway.
Not the end! The vessel unto which we take back to the original life.

Da'at in Hebrew is a symbol of death as a step.

Death's door, a popular phrase, describes death as a gateway of sorts.

Death as the end resulting in nothing is nonsensical, improbable nihilism.

The medical definition is the *irreversible* cessation of life processes. The key word there is "irreversible," because it turns out people can be brought back from various types of "death" all the time.

I am a midwit, so please excuse me for my lack of words to describe this. But I would consider death being when your absolute spread of molecules are sufficiently dispersed beyond a certain threshold to be death. I cannot know if death can be reversed, if it was possible to rearrange your parts back together and breath life back into it. If that is possible, then death most be when they aren't fully put together. And even then, that depends on what is even considered to be "you" or "life" to begin with.

Death isn't real. We live in a simulation. When you "die" the data representing "you" is processed, analysed, and the data stored in an archive. Then a new human is generated in the coordinates where the data representing you was formerly located.

I unironically believe that what the Dharmic faiths describe as Samara, the multiple levels of existence and being, non-being, etc is an ancient understanding of the stimulatory nature of our reality. It all fits together frighteningly well.
