The guy is a legit mathematical physicist who did some meaningful work early on, but now he just does shitty podcasts and panders to the public instead of doing actual research. He is most well-known for his schizo theory of 'geometric unity', something which isn't taken all that seriously by actual physicists, much like E8.

The public perception of theoretical physics is very inaccurate. String theorists and the like understand that their work is highly speculative, nonetheless the trend over the past century seem to indicate the process of formulating mathematically elegant frameworks leads to results, but none of these people actually admit to these being correct, nor is this Weinstein's criticism - he's just butthurt that his schizo theories are being ignored.

On one side, there's the pop-soii podcast self-help crypto shill morons like his brother, Keating, Harris, Peterson, Friedman, Rogan, etc.

On the other, there's one-or-some-against-all more legit physicists like Sabine and Woit. I can never quite tell where he comes down on all this. He has an agenda, that much is obvious, but he's way more than a Degrasse-Tyson. At this point, I just think of him as an anti-Brian Greene.

I thought that too but if you watch some debates it really seems like some top physicists think that mathematics defines the universe. There was one I saw recently with Sabine and Roger Penrose talking with Michio Kaku and Michio talks about it add though it's real and there's no question about it whereas Sabine and Roger were looking at him like he was an idiot. I get the sane vibe from Ed Witten, he talks about supersymmetry like it's been proven. Possibly because they've spent decades of their life working on it and if they didn't fully believe in it they would likely become depressed knowing that there's a good chance they're wrong

First of all, these public 'debates' are hardly actual scientific discourse. Michio and Sabine are hardly authorities in their respective fields, they're mainly known for being publisizers. As for Witten, I haven't heard him make any real claims of string theory being proven, in fact he's said quite a lot of the opposite. What they do like to say is how 'disturbingly good' mathematical elegance is at leading to discoveries, but notice the use of the word, 'disturbingly'.

Michio Kaku isn't an active theorist anymore, and he's built his career on peddling string theory hype to the public. You shouldn't use him as your example of a "string theorist." If you want a more typical view read interviews of Strominger.

Where are you getting this from? String theory was a framework initially built by physicists such as Nambu, Gell-Mann, Susskind, Nambu and Veneziano to explain strong interactions. Its modern incarnation was spearheaded by Witten, Maldecena, Polchinski and Polyakov.

That's actually quite a point of contention in science, math and philosophy. It really comes down to the question of if math was 'discovered' or 'invented' (whatever that means). However, nomatter what philosophical camp your in, this shouldn't influence your view on scientific rigour.

Mathematics is "magically" linked to physics insofar as the physical world has a logic, and if you find axioms that make sense for it, mathematical deductions will be automatically linked to it. The axioms don't come from math but insights into principles, like Newton's laws. They make sense for a wide range of physical situations (but not QM for instance) so everything mathematically derived from them makes sense.
