They usually change the definition of what a addition operator does and believe they're smart for thinking to do that. 2+2=5 if the + sign means add both sides and slip in an extra 1 just because. Then they justify it by saying addition rules, like all math, is a social construct and should be open to being questioned.

It depends on how you define a number. If the number represents the standard deviation of noise, then 1+1=sqrt(2). You could probably design some correlated noise to produce whatever sort of math you want

That's the issue. What counts as "1" in this context? If I cut the sheep in half is it 2 sheep or 1/2 a sheep or 0 because it's dead? Is a pregnant sheep 1 sheep or 1.3 sheep? That's the problem you take an abstract like 1+1 but try to apply it to a physical scenery while still keeping the abstraction.
