The reason why SpaceX is so successful is because it's profit driven. Believe it or not, getting the billions of dollars in funding required to build a company like SpaceX isn't going to happen if that company isn't profitable (or shows clear potential to be profitable) is not something that can happen if they don't care about money and focus exclusively on exploration. The technology needed for manned Mars exploration/colonization is decades away and it's better for SpaceX to be successful long-term rather than simply being Musk's vanity project sustained by him spending his finite personal fortune.
