Human-generated GHG or the massive amounts belched out by volcanos? How come Al Gore's correlation between historical CO2 and temperature showed that temperature led CO2, not the reverse? If CO2 is a factor, how much of an impact does the first megaton of CO2 in the atmosphere have compared to additional amounts added to the present total?

One possibility is it's like Alzheimer's. Important people tricked themselves onto the wrong path decades ago and now everybody's stuck following that premise. Additionally the earlier scientists who better understood the underlying math, statistics, physics, may be replaced by specialized climate scientists who take models from that time period as given without necessarily fully understanding how their new analyses may invalidate parts of what they're relying on.
Another possibility is there's a group of influential entities working in international spaces like the UN, who are deeply concerned about Limits to Growth, and climate change (formerly global warming) was selected as the most likely scenario to allow their side to gain the necessary control and influence over the public to stop the predicted Malthusian conclusion. So they support the ipcc and its members and other possible authorities to push their messaging.
