I don't know what sports you're into, but say in gridiron typical tests involve the 40 yard dash, the bench press, the vertical jump, and a few others. You get several dimensions of physical ability, rather than one quotient to rule them all. Because you'd have to have a room-temperature "IQ" to believe that a good bench translates into a good sprint. But when it comes to intelligence, somehow one number is enough to cover short term memory, long term memory, spatial reasoning, arithmetic speed, pattern recognition, etc, etc.
