What is to stop people from useing ground based lasers to mess with satellite constelations?
seems like ground based lasers would have a big advantage over space based ones because they would have a cooling medium, ie a ship based laser could use seawater similar to how marine nuclear reactors do.
In space meanwhile you are stuck with inefficient heatsinks.

Also i wonder if you could make a more efficient heat exchanger system on the moon? or if you can use transpiration cooling in vacuum to improve performance.

at equivalent tech levels planetside will always have the upper hand on anything in orbit. You can build thicker armour and larger guns, you have easy cooling, you have vast resources at hand, your movement isn't contstraind to straight lines and your manouvering isn't hard capped by the amount of fuel on board, you can actually hide etc.
Until the other side decides to drop rocks ofc but that's not really in orbit anymore.

Will Relativity actually have any value to add to the launch industry at this point?
>Well 3D printing is cheaper because you don't need tooling!
Then how come you've raised way more money than most private companies at your stage and haven't even launched yet?
>Uh, well 3D printing will make assembly faster!
How come it's taken as long for you to assemble and test one rocket as it took for SpaceX to build and test four?
>Uh uh generative design makes rocket construction better!
How much of that generative design is really necessary when you're attacking the same problems people have research and developed solutions for in the past 70 years of spaceflight?
>Uh uh uh....Mars?

See, I don't think Relativity has a business case anymore whether or not their test flight succeeds. No one cares if it's the Falcon 9 but 3D printed, when we already have the Falcon 9

2) This also doesn't track with what I've heard from my former boss who was actually college buds with Ellis and still keeps up with him. Cuban especially started pushing them to diversify into consumer goods, even had one of their printers make a bike frame to demonstrate it but Ellis didn't want to veer from aerospace. You're still only ever as good as your alloy, and in some cases it's more work and money to develop that alloy than to just suck it up and make design changes or just starting to get to work
I've had to quote 3D printed and traditionally machined parts for many aerospace projects and 90% of the time traditional machining wins out because you just can't print the alloy with the properties you need

>Are telescopes on the Moon doomed before they’ve even been built?
>For radioastronomers, the far side of the Moon could be the last unspoilt refuge in the Solar System. Planet Earth — and all the human-made electromagnetic noise it spews out into space — stays permanently below the horizon, so that any radio observatories positioned there would be free to observe the cosmos without interference.
>But an upcoming boom in lunar exploration could put that at risk. In the next ten years or so, the Moon will be the target of hundreds of orbiters and landers, each of which could create radio noise. Researchers voiced their concerns last month at a conference called Astronomy from the Moon: The Next Decades, which took place at the Royal Society in London.
>“This is probably the most radio-quiet place in the Solar System, and we need to preserve that,” said Marc Klein Wolt, an astronomer at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands.
>“Will the far side remain dark? You should already be nervous that I’m asking the question,” Joseph Lazio, a researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, told the conference.

>Scientists working at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., have concocted an innovative recipe for giant telescope mirrors on the Moon. To make a mirror that dwarfs anything on Earth, just take a little bit of carbon, throw in some epoxy, and add lots of lunar dust.
>For years, Chen had been working with carbon-fiber composite materials to produce high-quality telescope mirrors. But Chen and his colleagues decided to try an experiment. They substituted carbon nanotubes (tiny tubular structures made of pure carbon) for the carbon-fiber composites. When they mixed small amounts of carbon nanotubes and epoxies (glue-like materials) with crushed rock that has the same composition and grain size as lunar dust, they discovered to their surprise that they had created a very strong material with the consistency of concrete. This material can be used instead of glass to make mirrors.
>They next applied additional layers of epoxy and spun the material at room temperature. The result was a 12-inch-wide mirror blank with the parabolic shape of a telescope mirror. All of this was achieved with minimal effort and cost.
>"After that, all we needed to do was coat the mirror blank with a small amount of aluminum, and voilà, we had a highly reflective telescope mirror," says Rabin. "Our method could be scaled-up on the moon, using the ubiquitous lunar dust, to create giant telescope mirrors up to 50 meters in diameter." Such an observatory would dwarf the largest optical telescope in the world right now: the 10.4-meter Gran Telescopio Canarias in the Canary Islands.

There is no amount of "making former C++ code be neural networks" if the way you divided the problem up is your core issue ensuring you are never going to get something good.
Time and time again it has been shown you solve things well with a holistic, few network approach rather than arbitrary problem subdivision because that ALWAYS becomes your bottleneck.

I only knew that something fucky was going on because I already knew that there were no launches from KSC scheduled, and I just so happen to live right next to the Cape. It caused much less panic than the "lmao missiles r on their way tuck your head between your cheeks and kiss your ass" text that caused the panic in Hawaii a year or two before this event occurred. I still have the photos I took on one of my phones because I posted them on /sfg/ asking if anyone knew what the fuck was going on and if we were all about to die. I've used DMLS for rocket engines. The reduction in part count, design complexity, and lead time is staggering. I'm still skeptical on additive for large structures, but the advantages it offers for smaller components is unquestionable.

Of course, most newspace companies realize this and are 3D printing a decent chunk of their propulsion systems.

Michoud's highest achieved ET production cadence was 11 in a year. Unsure what the maximum production rate could've been, but (at least until STS 51-L) likely all of them would've been claimed by STS operations.
Then of course, modifying the ET for tandem payloads is non-trivial, and would likely require alterations to Michoud as well. Good luck doing that while the Shuttle is still flying Those Alterations would decrease its output and increase its costs at a time when NASA was aiming for 15 launches in 1986. .

I am dead serious by the way.
the space navy will be THE branch of the military in the future. Since the wet navy and air force are by definition incapable of operating without an atmosphere/hydrosphere, they might get rolled up into a "sphere force".
At least they have clear use cases for a place like mars where you can use planes or a water world like europa where one might need submarines, it's difficult to say what Armies will look like. On one hand they are extra fucked since without EVA suits they are even further constrained to only places with breathable air, so basically earth, maybe some domed over craters or ravines, and the 1 or 2 super big dick spin habs, while space marines are used for everything else.
On the other hand they might create units intended for fighting in vacuum and space marines will only be used for tiniest rocks and bases, or never created at all.

I'm sure there's some kind of secret message he's trying to say. He posted it at 18:49 pacific time. With 18 if you add its digits you get 9, which is Starship's diameter. The 49 could mean 4/9, thus, a launch on April the 9th, which is exactly 5 weeks from now. Also, the meme talks about bears, meaning he's actually bearish on the outcome of the launch. Typical of Elon, though, he gave Falcon Heavy a 50/50 chance of succeeding on the first try after all. I don't know what the woman in the image could mean.

His association with Ghislaine Maxwell is well documented, thats what lead to his divorce. The Washington Post's lacking coverage of the Maxwell story was Bezos' admission of guilt.
The Washington Post doesn't turn a profit, but it would if it were willing to run the type of news stories which people really want to read. Bezos makes enough money from other sources that he doesn't mind losing $50 million a year on his PR mouthpiece.

You must be new here to think that the media talking about it makes it factual and eminently important. The oldspace companies and politicians alike were starting to get on Elon's case for threatening the gravy train by then, and they were willing to make a mountain out of a molehill if it gave them a shot at slowing SpaceX down.

Starship OFT-1 is NET March 20. L2 states this and a random dude on who supposedly works for SpaceX confirms it.
We also have seen maritime buoys appear at Starbase
SpaceX also has a brand new boat on the West coast which is unaffiliated with Vandenberg launches or fairing recoveries. Looks like it’s gonna be heading out to Hawaii

Information about the situation with Vega C LV launch

>In anticipation of the results of investigation of possible reasons that caused recent failure of the European Vega C launcher from our European colleagues, the State Space Agency of Ukraine recently learnt from the European mass media about a Statement of the European Space Agency on such possible reasons.

>The Statement which is based on the conclusions of the Independent Enquiry Commission unfortunately leaves no grounds for further discussions and casts a shadow over the reputation of the space industry of Ukraine.

>With all due attention to and consideration for the opinion of our European colleagues from the dedicated Independent Enquiry Commission, the State Space Agency of Ukraine believes that the presented conclusions remain to be premature and may still require further investigation to identify if there could be additional factors that led to the failure of Vega C LV launch.

>The State Space Agency of Ukraine believes it is important to stress that all the products delivered by the Ukrainian space industry to our European partners were completely compliant with the requirements imposed. Ukrainian specialists who participated in a certain part of investigation which they were granted access to, provided their considerations and suggestions that objectively did not find reflection in the conclusions of the Independent Enquiry Commission.

>Whatever reasons could have rushed our European colleagues with the recent Statement, the State Space Agency of Ukraine encourages our European partners to perform additional analysis and considerations that would take into account other potential factors as well as suggestions diligently proposed by the Ukrainian experts.

French and Ukrainian are now pressuring ESA to do a new investigation... FUN

O'Neill Cylinder requires Earth level economy established in space. Its going to take at least 100 years to make that happen with SpaceX and Tesla firing on all cylinders. Exclude those and you're looking at 200 years; with a significant chance of extinction occurring before that is actually achieved. Dems suck, their idea of progress is more social than technical or material. Repubs are just as trash; and their idea of progress is to regress society by 50 years. The only way out of this circular shithole spiral is to escape its gravity and re-establish a better system somewhere far beyond its reach.

>Direct payments from European governments to American companies for use of commercial space stations could be politically problematic. “The taxpayers in Europe don’t want to pay directly to private American companies,” said Nicolas Maubert, space counselor at the French Embassy in the U.S. and representative of the French space agency CNES in the U.S., at the conference panel. Actually, yes. Blue buying ULA would mean that they can install BE-4s on Vulcans for their internal cost rather than for a vendor's price, they could eventually swap out the Centaur V's RL-10s for internally produced BE-3Us or BE-7s, which would mean they'd need fewer GEM-63s to get the same performance. All of that brings the Vulcan's cost down which either makes it more profitable or able to be sold for a lower sticker price. It's not nearly enough to make it market dominant, but it would be a lot more competitive. For Vulcan, it's the best overall move.

Tory would get to run a space company where he only has to deal with one idiot boss, ULA would finally get a propulsion development division, and Bezos would have bought his way into a big government contract by taking over a big part of NSSL phase 2 and 3.

Also, we'd get to see the last Delta IV Heavy launch with a Blue Origin logo on its payload fairing. I know that we're already into the fourth year of 2020, but it's nice to think that there's still room for things to get even weirder.

The worst case scenario is Boeing buying out Lockheed to take full control of ULA. A slightly less worse case scenario is ULA being bought out a pack of faceless venture capital suits. Or maybe one of those extra weird longshot suggestions like Amazon or Apple. Those would both be terrible.

The one you suggested isn't great, but there's no chance for Vulcan to stuck around past one major block upgrade anyway, and even if they do send Tory back to his horses it still puts national security launch in the hands of two companies that are actually serious about perusing reusability.

That's a lot of customers writing a lot of checks.

The second to last paragraph really does sound like Berger thinks the military is trying to hold out a branch to these startups with the hope that they will be able to bridge the moat SpaceX has dug so they can eventually shut them out again and replace them with firms who are willing to hire them in the commercial sector as do nothing functionaries after they've funneled millions to them in military contracts. That is basically his explanation for why they are giving Blue Origin literally every single opportunity to fuck up and still get contracts.
