Why is Einstein so famous, especially compared to those who worked in similar fields to him? I get that his work was cool and stuff, and of course, he deserves to be recognised, but what set him apart from people like Von Neumann or Feynman? Did he have a crack PR team or something?

No it doesn't. Who becomes mega famous is random, but biased by looks amongst other things. Steinmetz died before WW2, so he couldn't possible ride the same wave as Einstein and your "point" is meaningless. Einstein's work is also more exotic and has popsci appeal. The photo-electric effect work that he did was good. Relativity not as much (he only received the Nobel prize for the Photo electric effect).

In any event relativity descended into a clusterfuck free for all with Quantum mechanics and free will and superdeterminism that physicists still kill each other for nowadays. I think there is a thread on this topic right now actually.

Almost none at all. His only contribution is making up the idea of a "photon" particle, rather than the wave-packet interpretation preferred prior to him. Heinrich Hertz discovered the effect and first characterized it. It used to be named after him actually.

Einstein accelerated the field really quickly. Special relativity was nothing special. With or without him it would of been found out. However general relatvitity was something special. Its ability to model the universe is amazing. He was very very ahead of his time. Hell he even had to learn non euclidean geometry making general relativity in making his models. Non euclidean geometry was some obscure math some math nerds fiddled with before general relativity came along. Im 95% sure we would still not have not discovered general relativity if einstein never existed.
