Tianeptine works fucking great. Supposedly it's a tricyclic antidepressant but it ignores all of the typical receptors that drugs in the same class hit and acts like a synthetic opoid instead. You start feeling warm and fuzzy after about a half hour and the high lasts 4-6 hours.

That said, it's not approved as a psychiatric medication in the US and it might turn you into a dope addict.

True, but it begs the question if we will ever find actual working drugs without sides. Perhaps it is impossible, but I get the feeling there's already something better out there, but pharma companies are waiting for process lines to amortize before building new plants for the better stuff.

Same for the shitty birth control pills we have.

Depends. The drugs certainly have an effect. For many issues they work very well and help a lot.

They can't fix depression brought about by modern live, though.

>> No.15166570

>>15166250
As >>15166515 says, medication aren't a panacea. They don't magically fix things.

All they can do is help give you a springboard, a solid ground to start from and build your life back up.

When it come to which med works, it differs from person to person. Different meds work differently well for different people.

My suggestion is keep a discussion open with your doctor as you test them out, weigh negatives vs positives and, critically, use that time to build good habits. Learn what sends you into depression and how to avoid it. Cognitive behavioral therapy also is scientifically proven to work as well as, or better than, medication.

Seeing a therapist can be greatly helpful in figuring yourself out, but it's not a necessity.

Personally I need social interaction once a week, a schedule, proper food and a modicum of excercise to feel good. If I notice my apartment is getting messy, I'm trying to stave off sleep and/or not wake up early and find myself not eating well, those are hard signs I'm slipping back and hence when I execute counter measures. I make sure to visit friends, go for a walk, eat out if I have to, as long as I est proper. I also write lists of what needs doing and its priority then focus on that. As I said, the specifics are different for everyone though.

And if there's one thing to take away from this it's hey, you're not alone and there is a way to get better and wrest control back from that black dog depression

Serotonin based antidepressants are just a shitty kickstart to help make changes in your life that'll then drag you out of the depression. Mostly they're just to make money.
Easier and much more effective/faster way is to get some adderall or other amphetamines to get that feelgoods and pep in your step with less and milder side effects. Just don't get dependent like a fool.
Still gotta make those lifestyle changes too. Exercise, diet, sleep. That'll change your thinking too.

If you're a man, destroying or avoiding your sources of stress is the true psychiatric remedy.

Nothing more bunk than psychiatric mediation. Sure, statistically it (((may))) work on some patients, but we don't even have a grounded definition of for-the-sake-of-the-argument: depression. How can you say you've cured depression in a patient by giving them a pill when everyone's definition of depression is different, and it's all self-reported differently by patients? How can you morally give a pill to someone after claiming that there was statistical signification that the pill cured someone's depression, and yet we don't understand the causal mechanisms of the drug? There are no /sci/ approved psychiatric medicines.

Convincing but wrong.

1. Evolution does not care about individuals survival (only about offspring)
2. Evolution does not optimize every source of failure away (given finite time). Again: It doesn't fucking care if you develop a disorder. It is just applying mutations and trying to get forward. If you develop a disorder then it just knows where it shouldn't look further. You can really compare that to a hill climbing algorithm.

Antidepressant medications are a total fucking crapshoot. They might help a little, do fuck-all, or make you even more suicidal. And there's no way of knowing which one will cause which until you take one for a few weeks minimum. Maybe you'll get lucky and the first one you try actually helps. Maybe you'll end up like me and go through 15+ meds before finding one that actually helped (Nortriptyline and Auvelity).
Ketamine therapy did nothing for me, though I've heard it works for some people. Fucking expensive though.
ECT resulted in (what I perceive to be) permanent damage to my memory and cognition. They assure you such effects are temporary, but not in my fucking case. Not recommended.
Apparently psychedelic-assisted therapy is a thing that works for some people, but you have to qualify for clinical trials and good luck with that.

Oh and don't fuck with benzos, it's not worth it.

Magic mushrooms

A single, large dose of psilocybin created a sustained, year-long obliteration of major depression symptoms in terminal cancer patients. Note that these results are far more substantial than standard, pharmacological treatments of depression--and only a single dose was required.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5367557/

Psilocybin produced an 80% rate of success in smoking cessation, vs. 35% success rate of other methods (patch, gum, etc).
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4286320/

Psilocybin shown to radically reduce conditioned fear responses.
https://www.realclearscience.com/blog/2013/06/low-doses-of-psilocybin-help-extinguish-conditioned-fear.html

Psilocybin promotes neurogenesis, and literally triggers your brain to grow new neural pathways.

And every single one of you can grow a lifetime's supply in a few months for less money than you spend on video games.
