15129159 No.15129159 [Reply] [Original]

When Elon Musk makes it to Mars eventually, will the people living there have to pay taxes to anyone? The space treaty is an international agreement that space is the common heritage of mankind. The tax I would hope to not pay more than any other is property tax, but would there even be land ownership in space? Moreover, there will need to be police and the rule of law on a Mars colony won't there? Otherwise some douchebags could band together and kick people out of their houses or something. Steal women, etc. Are people even thinking about this yet? I know my questions aren't very organized... Feel free to comment on any of them.

There's already bases on mars, the moon, and thousands of other places throughout space. Their black budget programs so they are payed for already by our taxes. We have to evolve as a collective a little more before all that what you're talking about happens tho. First off, we can't survive on the surface of mars without space suits. There's bases on mars already with people and ayys in them but they are deep underground. It won't be like earth with walls an bridges and roads and vegetation and flowers. There's not even any animals on mars. We'll have to grow and bring everything so we'll naturally become more holistic and survival based yet still technologically advanced. Think Star Wars, Star Trek, not the ghetto or the hood on earth. Think sci-fi because that's what it is and how it'll be. All the sci-fi movies you ever saw were trying to disclose and prepare you for this. There won't be police walking around with, there will just be military, ours and whatever civilizations are up there. Our government has already made agreements with the galactic federation. WE HAVE BEEN ON MARS FOR DECADES UNDERGROUND. There was even a mars mission during Bush Jr's presidency and he backed out and left two of our astronauts stranded on mars. There won't be taxes or money or becuase we're bringing everything from earth. There won't be any stores or any skyscrapers or buildings or houses period. The surface will always be pretty much desolate. It'll be more like star wars or star trek, not boyz n tha hood or new jack city or the tv show cops.

Yes because he is a US Citizen and under the Outer Space Treaty, it would effectively be a US colony especially if it was controlled/dispatched from a US-based communications center like Houston, TX. The only way Musk could avoid all taxes is if he were to buy his own country from another, establish recognized independence within the UNSC, and sea launch everything. You know, the service Ukraine was going to provide until Russia exploded their sealaunch platform in 2014.

Doesn't matter if it is a US colony or not. US citizens are obligated to pay US taxes on money they've earn regardless of location. Tax treaties do allow US citizens to deduct taxes they pay to another country but they only avoid US taxes if that country's taxes are higher than those of the US.
For a Mars colony, unless it was independent, Musk's taxes would work just like they do on Earth. If it were independent, he wouldn't even be able to deduct the taxes he paid to the Mars government. The IRS isn't going to send agents to Mars to arrest him but they can seize his assets on Earth.

Basically mars settlement will be done by a corporation owned by investors on earth. It's too expensive to happen any other way. It's possible that taxes would be taken under a different title. Like rent, or board or simply a lower rate of pay so the corporation can afford infrastructure and stuff.

There is no capacity within the law for a sovereign Martian state and any attempt to form one would cause conflict. Especially if the colony is still making money.

Land will likely be leased to ranchers. Inside the habitats you will either pay rent or purchase depreciating properties such as units. At the end of their life they will be knocked down and rebuilt.

The corporation would have it's own private security force once it reaches a certain size.

Basically freedom is impossible. To achieve these things we all need to be part of a larger organisation and that company will most probably require a portion of your income to sustain itself.

Admittedly a lot of my posts here reflect logical conclusions I have come to while developing my own SciFi novel. We would probably never have gone to the moon if nobody wrote a book about it.

It's very interesting to consider what life would be like in a remote colony run by a single corporation. Probably like one of those remote mining sites or an oil rigg.

Ceres is already claimed and Vesta by proxy. So is Venus and Mercury btw. The inner solar system has already been divided up. USA (gov/mil not corporate) wants Mercury. Russia wants Venus. Musk wants Mars but corporations will probably really run the place. Everyone will fight over the moon because it will control earth.

Anyway, there is not much out there that anyone needs. Mars has everything it needs. Settling Ceres though will drive down the price of propellant thereby opening space up to everyone.

Fixed.

I'm not sure but I strongly suspect that at some point, likely triggered by a technological advancement, the earth will no longer be content to take profits and will begin to take much more by force.

I'm not sure what makes you think extra earth colonies would be immune to the nuclear non proliferation treaty. Nukes are suck a brain let tier topic though honestly.

Anyway I'm expecting at least a few centuries before things get violent.

>> No.15130096

>>15130051
I believe they'd be immune as the terms simply can't be imposed hundreds of millions of kilometers away. Some countries on earth have broken the non-proliferation treaty to pursue their own ambitions already. Let's say Ceresians began producing interplanetary missiles like Best Korea as part of a bid for greater independence. If earthers attempted to stop Ceres it would be in the interest of Mars to intervene, as they are natural intermediaries of the asteroid belt and its vast wealth. You can imagine how it would play out.

>> No.15130130

>>15130096
I've considered these possibilities and they are valid however when you can bombard a planetary target with a gravity well as large as the earth you no longer require nukes. Kinetic missiles are essentially a huge iron spike perhaps with coatings to preserve mass until impact. You launch them from a battery of Maglev rails from a low mass orbital body at high velocity into an enemy gravity well. They are cheaper, faster to make, pollute less and are a superior weapon in almost every single way compared to a nuke. You can see how heavily screened any potential independent operators must be if they want a place out there. It's simply too easy to destroy the earth.

The political complexities I am less Cognizant of. It's complicated. Some colonies may have independence from the start, others will not. Mars will not. If you are independent on Ceres and Mars needs your help to become independent what do you do. It's too early to say, alternatives are possible but for any of that to happen earth's greed must be sated.

Going into this you have to realise that if nobody will trust you with one of those KRUSTY reactors then you are not going to achieve any form of independence.

I have two questions:
Is there something burnable in Mars so we can harvest energy?
If so, is it practical to carry a machine or will solar panels (that far from the sun) and nuclear batteries always be king there?
I know nuclear batteries would be the answer but it's still expensive and relatively unsafe to be sending one after the other in the future.

Mars is short on oxygen. Combustion is a poor choice for energy on Mars. Most people will use solar but during dust storms energy production will drop and there may not be sufficient nuclear for everyone to still be able to do what they want. After the dust storm the panels need cleaning.

Mars is highly likely to provide the radioactive materials required for nuclear power.

Possible but energy inefficient. Spending energy to make less energy is not economical.

Hydrogen fuel cells may be a thing but that tech is in its infancy. There is water on Mars to split into the required oxygen and hydrogen and a fuel cell is more efficient than combustion.

But it still takes energy to produce.
