>don't care about the field (robotics)
>don't care about a career in academia
>don't much care about making money, getting a family or living past the age of 30 either
>just know that I'll always feel uncomfortable if I don't play the education system to completion

is this a good reason to keep doing the phd? started this fall. I work as a researcher at a national institute (not US) and the pay is decent (for not-US). the main drawback is that I could be making about 50% more in industry but then I'd have to actually work.

yet another midwit filtered for choosing a phd for the wrong reasons.

The most valuable thing in life is time. Are you sure you want to spend your time on this. I myself did a degree in a field I no longer work in and I regret doing the degree and I wish I had thought it through a bit more. I guess it depends what you want out of life though, if you don't have any longer term goals then time might not be that important to you

Even if you don't care about any of those things, a PhD is a waste of time

You're barely into it. That's some serious completionism. No, it's not a good reason.

BTW I opened this thread because it reminded me of my own situation, but my "completionism" is just finishing writing everything up.

go to college to increase career options and income you fucking moron. unless you can go for free, why spend money on something arbitrarily that wont generate income? it is an investment in yourself, dont piss it away for some nonsensical reason.

I didn't choose a phd. I was just working at the institute and had no reason not to apply because I get most of the credits just for working as a researcher.

I want to spend time jerking off and playing vidya but they don't pay you for that. Well, I do sometimes jerk off and play vidya at work but that's not technically part of my job description.

I'm asking because I just started. The only real reason I'm still going is that it would feel weird to stop now that I have all the previous levels unlocked.

I don't have to pay a penny. In fact the university even pays me a small stipend just for being enrolled.

I think you know the answer to this already don't you

I say keep going and get your PhD. It might be different if you had career/family goals that were in conflict.
But since there's nothing else in particular you need or want to do with your time right now, gaining a PhD is easily one of the better ways to spend it.

good reason, carry on
