How do I get a good grasp of organic chem?
I feel like I have a good understanding of the inorganic side of things
Organic chem in comparison fucks me in the ass

Orgo is designed to be difficult with a lot of rote memorization. Is both to prepare people for med school which has a lot of rote memorization and acts as a gatekeeper for med school.

do the assigned problems even if you dont have to turn them in. if going through your notes while doing the assigned problems arent enough, do more problems in the textbook until you understand it.

Everything in O-chem is based on a handful of concepts. Electronegativity, acid/base and redox. You can use these principles to deduce how a reaction will proceed, most mechanisms are either going to look like Sn1 or Sn2/E1 or E2 reactions, just depends on the conditions and reagents. Sometimes reagents and catalysts can be deduced, sometimes you need to remember them. Plus there are a handful of ad hoc reactions you need to memorize, but you should focus on classifying mechanisms or parts of mechanisms as to whether they look like 1 or 2 step reactions, it'll make it much easier to understand.
Spectroscopy/NMR is basically just like doing a soduku, just do a ton of them and you'll get better at it. Personally I never really figured out C-13 NMR but whatever. Synthesis is a lot harder, try to work backwards if possible.
People who emphasize memorization in Ochem are way off base, the whole year of standard sophomore O-chem really only introduces a handful of basic ideas that you can use to figure most of everything else.
