I need to change an alcohol compound into an ester. The alcohol needs to react with a fatty acid in the presence of an acid catalyst to create the ester.
If I have 1) a powdered compound with an alcohol group 2) coconut oil as a fatty acid, and 3) hydrochloric acid in water, how do I perform the reaction, given that the coconut oil is insoluble with the aqueous acid?
Would mixing them in a beaker and heating it on the stove top be good enough to esterify the alcohol?

If you don't use solvent with affinity for both polar and non-polar molecules you need really vigorous stirring to maximize surface area
Also don't put beaker directly on the oven, use oil bath

Thank you. Could you suggest any non-toxic solvents? Would some castile soap work or do I need something more specific?
