Real numbers ironically aren't very number-like. They don't represent a distinct anything they are a sort of imaginary infentesimally connected thing. Where as a number as it is originally conceived represents a distinct thing like one apple vs 2 apples.

an arithmetical value, expressed by a word, symbol, or figure, representing a particular quantity and used in counting and making calculations.

If you treat it that way it loses it's "realness" and becomes an integer multiplied by a scalar quantity.

yes, an infinitely non-periodical decimal fraction

Try using that in any kind of equation and you will be forced to make it discrete and terminate at some point. Even replacing pi with the symbol for pi is just a discrete symbol representing the complete pi that you have abstracted out of your representation.

The point is that a number is a discrete thing. Continuous numbers are more of an idea. Its why the universe could absolutely be a simulation because even though you can conceive of things as continuous every time they are actually represented to you they become discrete.

It is true though. If the universe is mathematical in nature the only force necessary to breathe life into the mechanisms of the universe is a computer. A computer is what determines the outcome of the equation for gravity. Other forces are just abstractions on this. That's the thing though if it is a simulation we live in a very poorly designed simulation or maybe a malevolent simulation. It would have been EASIER to make a simulation that is kinder to consciousness.

Any set of elements that satisfy the Peano axioms.
That gives you the natural numbers. If you need more, you can build up other numbers with relatively simple set-theoretic constructions.
