It's become popular to claim that distracting, short, lackluster activities like browsing tiktok or watching youtube videos make one dumber, less capable of sustaining attention on a particular activity. This would probably include browsing 4chan. One example is a famous indie game programmer Jonathan Blow claiming that not reading books, consuming reddit, tiktok and similar things have decreased his attention span and made him dumber, and he feels that after reading a book or doing other high-attention-span activities his mind starts to work better and more efficiently.
Is there any non-anecdotal evidence to suggest this?
Conversely, would forcing oneself to engage in a lot prolonged attention activities bring any mental benefits?
Thank you for your attention.

books were just the TikTok of their day. I spend my time solving partial differential equations.

If you don't spend at least a couple of hours on each equation then that's as damaging to your brain as tik tok. Sorry to break it.

>programmer
Did he forget he is a programmer? It's one of the highest attention span jobs there is. You pretty much can't program if you're not focused.

I believe it. I feel dumber in proportion to the amount of time I've spent scrolling 4chan. I assume other social media are no better.

Are you one of those people who thinks listening to classical music makes you smarter too? Cuz why not? Boring things make you smart right? It's not just that the differences can be attributed to dominant culture and technology at the time. If we all spoke in Egyptian would be be smarter too? It's old and old=smart somehow, right?

yes, I do. I'm the anon here who solves PDEs as a hobby here >>15088526 I also read books, but I realize it's just an outdated form of entertainment. For instance, I read Incest by the Marquis De Sade. My dick got hard reading about that dad fucking his hawt loli daughter. Explain how it made me smarter?

Besides forcing your brain to concentrate for a long period of time on a single task, it probably stimulated your verbal intelligence and imagination better than tiktok ever could.

5 second videos will not help you with long term planning or contemplation of self. I don’t know if it will decrease IQ. Young people with short attention spans are quite obnoxious and attention hungry.

any form of narrative will do that. You could listen to someone tell you a story to the same affect.

>> No.15093756

>>15093428
Mentally decodifying a string of letters and attributing feelings, images and sounds to words on a paper demands much more subconscious effort and focus than listening to someone tell you a story. The point is that your brain has to work harder. Simply listening to someone tell you a story is somewhat a more passive activity than reading a book, same for TikTok.

I don't think what you read or don't read can increase your IQ

You can’t tell the entire story of book in a tictoc post. Even if you could, you’re more likely to zone out eventually, because you’re not actually doing anything to keep you occupied. When you read a book, it forces you to stay focused.
Anyway I agree insofar as it‘s of little use to read a book like Harry Potter or the latest Steven King novel. But I totally disagree with you when it comes to textbooks with exercises in them.

Read a book on how to ace IQ tests.

Short attention span activities like 4chan (especially boards like /tv/) and TikTok are basically poison for the brain.

Fair. I meant intelligence.

What I mean is I've read many books throughout childhood hoping it would make me smarter, and yet I still tested as a retard on an IQ test.
