I want to study physics but this is the type of shit that scares me away from it. I worry that even if I manage to obtain a PhD I won't be able to secure a place in research or a closely related industry.

Dunno, but someone with a PhD is infinitely more likely to do a post-doc than someone who bitches out before even starting a bachelor's. None of it is easy one way or the other, but you're putting the cart for the horse; there's a lot of time in an undergrad to figure out if you're interested in or apt to do research work long-term, and there are other opportunities.

Someone with more experience than me can probably provide a statistical answer, but I think you're at the wrong point to be asking that question (and a post-doc is just contract work you wouldn't want to do indefinitely, while landing a tenure-track faculty position is the bigger filter).
