I spend most of my time at university where everyone is nice or at least pretends to be, then I forget what the real world is like sometimes when I go to other businesses and people are rude, racist, misogynist.

You have no idea what it's like doing research at a competitive school. There were attempted suicides in the lab space at my school. The abuse grad students get at the top schools only happens in certain high pressure and lucrative professions.

That said, Harvard is like 20% black now and is becoming a STEM laughing stock.

3. review of your research is not necessary
4. get $$$

90% of "successful research" is just landing grants, then the pipeline to publishing your "discoveries" is equally well lubricated.
