I think it was fluctuations in the matter that made up the primordial atom. So I guess it's more where did that atom come from. But yeah it could have just always been there

The Grand Design by Hawking is actually a very well written book which communicates the idea of spontaneous creation due to fluctuations in a easy to understand way. Since you’re on /sci/ than you’re most likely a midwit and that book will be your best bet of understanding the concepts you mock.
